Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris A prize to celebrate valuable contributions to protecting the Baltic Sea’s environment and ecology.

Stiftelsen Björn Carlsons Östersjöstiftelse, även kallad BalticSea2020, grundades år 2005 av Björn Carlson (1935-2021) genom en donation om 500 miljoner kronor. Under sina första 15 verksamma år har stiftelsens tillgångar finansierat åtgärder och utvecklingsprojekt som bidrar till en friskare Östersjö samt forskning som breddat eller fördjupat kunskapen om Östersjön och dess avrinningsområde. telsen har påverkat EU:s fiskeri-och jordbrukslagstiftning, startat nästan 100 projekt för ett friskare hav och bidragit till att genomföra och publicera många viktiga vetenskapliga studier. Vidare har stiftelsen stöttat initiativ inom opinionsbildning och film i syfte att sprida kunskap om Östersjöns miljö till beslutsfattare, allmänhet och skolor. Sedan stiftelsen påbörjade sitt arbete 2005 har styrelsen fram till 2020 fattat beslut om anslag på cirka 650 miljoner kronor till projekt inom programområdena Fiske, Övergödning och Information.

År 2020 förändrade stiftelsen planenligt sitt miljöarbete för att 2021 byta inriktning från en forskningsstiftelse till en pris- och forskningsstiftelse. Det innebär att stiftelsen har inrättat ett pris – Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris, med en årlig summa på initialt 3 miljoner kronor. Stiftelsen bygger vidare på Björn Carlsons grundidé om att stiftelsen ska bidra till att vända situationen i Östersjön i positiv riktning och vill genom priset belöna forskning som lämnat värdefulla bidrag till en bättre östersjömiljö och möjliggöra till fortsatt arbete för havet. September 23, Professor Kerstin Johannesson was awarded Björn Carlsons Östersjöpris 2025 at Hasselbacken in Stockholm. The award was handed over by last year’s winner, Professor Ragnar Elmgren.

A special moment at this year’s award was the presence of all previous recipients Daniel Conley Jacob Carstensen Ragnar Elmgren Maren Voss.

The ceremony featured remarks by Bo Lehander, Agnes Karlsson (also moderator), Christina Rudén, Camilla Gustafsson and Maren Voss who showed her latest research – a project supported by the foundation through her prize funding.

The day ended with a scientific reception where the Björn Carlson Baltic Fellows presented five jointly developed research posters.
