Sri Lankan Spices Showcased to Leading Swedish Spice Importers

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm and the Export Development Board of Sri Lanka (EDB) in collaboration with the Swedish Spice & Flavour Association (Arom & Kryddföreningen) jointly organized the virtual event ‘Pure Ceylon Spices & Cinnamon Virtual Showcase 2026’ to promote Sri Lanka's spices in Sweden. Being the trade association of major spice import and distribution companies in Sweden, the Swedish Spice and Flavor Association is a member of the European Spice Association. The event brought together representatives of the Association’s members including the leading Swedish spice importers Santa Maria, Nordic Spice, Culinar Sverige, Kryddhuset i Ljung and Bodén & Lindeberg.

Speaking at the event, Secretary-General of the Swedish Spice and Flavour Association, Rasmus Backstrom noted the significant use of specific spices by Swedish people and the importance of reliable sourcing and long term partnership. He noted the strong reputation of Sri Lanka in the spice industry and expressed hope that the event will open the doors for new industry partnerships between the two countries.

The Chairman/CEO of EDB Mangala Wijesinghe addressing the participants noted the existing strong trade relations between the two countries and the potential for future growth. He highlighted the reputation of Sri Lankan spices worldwide and the opportunity the event provided for direct introduction of Sri Lankan spices to Swedish buyers. The Chairman invited the Swedish participants to attend the Sri Lanka Expo 2027 scheduled to be held in Colombo from 14-17 January 2027.

Assistant Director / Export Agriculture of the EDB Gayan Weerasinghe made a detailed presentation on Sri Lankan spices including on GI certification of true Ceylon Cinnamon and on its unique characteristics.

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Sweden Kapila Fonseka highlighted the possibility for international buyers to engage in direct sourcing from Sri Lanka for efficient and mutually beneficial trade relationships. The Ambassador noted the great potential in strengthening cooperation between the two counties in the spice industry sector and encouraged all participants to engage actively to explore how Sri Lanka’s world-renowned spices can add value to Swedish businesses and consumers.

Sri Lanka’s leading spice exporters HDDES Extracts, SDS Spices, New Lanka Global Export, EOAS Organics and Jayanath Spices introduced their unique products to the Swedish exporers participatingting in the meeting.

🇱🇰🇸🇪 Sweden - Sri Lanka Virtual Workshop Showcases Investment Opportunities in Sri Lanka

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm and Business Sweden jointly organized the Sweden - Sri Lanka Virtual Workshop to promote investment opportunities in Sri Lanka among leading Swedish companies. The workshop brought together over 25 Swedish businesses representing sectors including energy, manufacturing, food processing, digital technology, defence, and innovation.

Deputy Minister of Industry and Entrepreneurship Development Chathuranga Abeysinghe delivered the keynote address, highlighting recent economic reforms, investor-friendly policies, digital transformation initiatives, and opportunities in key sectors such as marine and fisheries, value-added agriculture, electrical and electronic manufacturing, and value-added minerals.

Market Manager of Business Sweden in New Delhi Pawan Tahlani, provided an overview of Sweden -Sri Lanka trade relations, existing Swedish investments in Sri Lanka, and upcoming initiatives aimed at fostering greater commercial engagement between the two countries.

The workshop also featured remarks by Trade & Invest Commissioner of Sweden to India Sofia Högman, Ambassador of Sweden to Sri Lanka Jan Thesleff, Ambassador of Sri Lanka to Sweden Kapila Fonseka, and Honorary Consul-General of Sweden to Sri Lanka Sanjay Kulatunga, who emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral trade and investment relations and reaffirmed their support for enhanced business collaboration between Sweden and Sri Lanka.

The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Stockholm and Business Sweden also announced plans to coordinate a Swedish investor delegation to Sri Lanka in January 2027, aligned with Sri Lanka Expo 2027, along with a virtual business matchmaking session later this year.
