Ambassador Juliana Dube-Gobotswang was recently invited to attend the 503rd Swedish National Day Celebrations which started at the Skansen, Sweden’s oldest open air Museum and Zoo, and ended at His Majesty King Carl XVI Gustaf’s Royal Palace.

The Swedish National Day of 6 June marks two key moments in Swedish history: when Gustav Vasa became King in 1523 and the adoption of the 1809 Constitution.

The National Day itself only became a public holiday in 2005, prior to this, it was known as Swedish flag day.

AFRICA DAY CELEBRATIONS IN SWEDEN

The Embassy of Botswana participated in the Africa Day celebrations held on 28th and 29th May 2026 in Stockholm, Sweden. The 2 day event started off with a Business Forum which was officiated by Honourable Mr. Johan Forssell, Minister for Migration. The Business Forum, which sought to shine a spotlight on African businesses, entrepreneurs, trading and investment in Africa, was attended by members of the diplomatic corps, representatives from civil society organizations, private sector, Sweden’s trade and business organisations and entrepreneurs.

Day 2 was a Cultural Event where the Ambassadors promoted African culture through music, traditional attire, artefacts, dance, food and traditional drinks in Sweden. Members of the Swedish government, friends of Africa from outside the diplomatic corps also joined, underscoring the continent's growing cultural influence in Sweden.

Africa Day, formerly African Freedom day and African Liberation day, is an annual commemoration of the founding of the then Organization of African Unity (OAU), now African Union (AU), on 25th May 1963. It is widely celebrated on the African continent and around the world.

Ambassador Juliana Dube-Gobotswang, is a member of the Network of Women Ambassadors in Stockholm (NWAS) and they recently hosted Hon. Camilla Waltersson Grönvall, Minister for Social Services of Sweden for a discussion on protecting children, vulnerable persons and persons living with disabilities.

The Minister provided an insightful discussion on social welfare, cooperation, and the importance of strengthening inclusive and resilient societies through dialgue and shared experiences. She added that a strong social service is one of the most important tools for crime prevention. She highlighted the importance of making all countries safer and more secure for children and keeping them away from crime and criminal networks. She added that her portfolio provided support for people experiencing domestic violence, substance abuse, or financial and social vulnerabilities. She further pointed out the support the Ministry provides for people living with disabilities striving to provide them with equal living conditions, accessibility, and full participation in society. Ambassadors also shared experiences of social services in their various countries and exchanged key learnings for benchmarking and improvement.

The Minister for Social Services operates within the umbrella Ministry of Health and Social Affairs. This Ministry has 4 Ministers who each have various areas of responsibility being:
•Social Affairs and Public Health (lead Minister);
•Health Care;
•Social Services; and
•Older People and Social Security.

The Embassy of Botswana in Sweden honours the legacy and life of the Former President of the Republic of Botswana, His Excellency Festus Gontebanye Mogae, who departed this life on 8th May 2026.

His Excellency Mogae, the third President of Botswana from 1998-2008, was a distinguished Statesman of humility, honour and extraordinary service whose exemplary leadership shaped Botswana’s economic prudence, good governance and world renowned efforts in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Botswana and on the African continent.

EMBASSY DELIVERS A LECTURE ON BOTSWANA’S FOREIGN POLICY TO UNIVERSITY STUDENTS OF KARLSTAD UNIVERSITY IN SWEDEN

On 4 May 2026, Ambassador Juliana Dube-Gobotswang delivered a lecture to University Students from the Foreign Affairs Association of Karlstad University.

The lecture focused on Botswana’s foreign policy, its guiding national principles and values which define Botswana’s identity, character and actions in the international sphere. The Ambassador emphasised Botswana’s priority on economic diplomacy and the importance of having a human rights centric approach to diplomatic matters.

The Ambassador also provided an overview of Botswana’s history, the government, development trajectory, its foundation as a democratic, peaceful and safe nation, the National principle of Botho, beef industry, tourism, sports as well as its bilateral cooperation with Sweden.

She further highlighted Botswana’s quest to diversify its economy beyond diamonds by promoting trade in various sectors through the Botswana Economic Transformation Programme (BETP). The discussion on trade also focused on Botswana’s prime location at the heart of the Southern Africa region making it an ideal location for trade and investment with access to more than 380 million people, as it provides a gateway to the whole region and beyond.

Karlstad University (KAU) has 17 000 students and its Foreign Affairs Association is the largest Association within the University.
