How does EV FirePro work in practice?

During the UK Demo Days Pro-Equip earlier this month, innovator Gareth Morgan, EV Fire Protection demonstrated how the automatic fire suppression system addresses the challenges of lithium-ion battery incidents in electric vehicles.

EV FirePro is designed to act when an EV battery enters thermal runaway:

⚡ Automatically activates without human intervention
💧 Delivers a targeted water spray directly to the underside of the vehicle, where the battery pack is located
🚗 Helps reduce fire intensity and limit spread to nearby vehicles
🏗️ Provides additional protection for adjacent vehicles and surrounding structures

⚠️ Traditional overhead sprinkler systems cannot effectively deliver water to the underside of a vehicle where the battery pack is located.

EV FirePro and EV Fire Safety in Focus at Demo Days in UK!⚡🚗

Demo Days brought together fire safety professionals, charging infrastructure experts and parking facility operators at Pro-Equip’s training centre.

The event hosted by Pro-Equip highlighted the growing risks associated with hashtag EV batteryfires and demonstrated how the system is designed to limit fire spread in EV parking and environments. Martin Lown BEM’s live demonstrations showed how spread laterally and vertically, underscoring the need for targeted suppression solutions. 🔥🚗

On our Finland–Sweden tour, we visited also Södertörns Brandförsvarsförbund and met, among others, Incident Commander Anders Palm. 🇫🇮🇸🇪

🚗🔋 During the visit, we explored the challenges of an electrifying world: as electric vehicles and energy storage systems become increasingly common, modern methods, training, and awareness -especially regarding firefighting technologies- are essential.

🔥🔋 BESS containers in particular can be high-risk, and they often lack dedicated fire protection. If the batteries catch fire, the blaze can be extremely intense, rapidly uncontrollable, and produce toxic gases.

🗣️ 🤝It was encouraging to see that knowledge sharing and expert discussions are invaluable: the challenges are global, making the exchange of best practices across borders crucial for everyone’s safety.

🚗💦It was particularly gratifying that – the world’s first fixed suppression system for electric vehicles – innovator Gareth Morgan from EV Fire Protection was present, also contributing his deep expertise on electric vehicle fires. 🇦🇺

🧑‍🚒 👩‍🚒 It was a pleasure visiting the Suomen Palopäällystöliitto – Finlands Brandbefälsförbund (Finnish Fire Officers’ Association) in Helsinki. We reflected on the growing concerns as the world and transportation increasingly electrify. It was especially valuable to meet with representatives of the Association, who represent the expertise of approximately 2,000 fire and safety professionals and face a wide range of fire situations on a daily basis.

⚡ 🚌 The rise of electrified transport brings new challenges for fire safety. Electric vehicle fires are fortunately rare, but their nature differs from traditional vehicle fires: damage to or overheating of a lithium-ion battery can trigger a chain reaction (thermal runaway), causing the fire to spread rapidly and even reignite after being extinguished.

🚗 🚿 This challenge inspired – a next-generation fixed fire suppression system designed to contain vehicle fires before firefighters arrive. Ensuring firefighter safety is a key priority. It was an honor to have inventor Gareth Morgan to join our 🇫🇮🇸🇪tour.

💧 💧 In parking structures and charging stations, it sprays water underneath the vehicle to control heat and prevent fire spread. Its lateral spray protects adjacent vehicles and building structures, slows fire progression, and creates a safer environment. This allows vehicle fires to be managed from a safer distance, supporting firefighter safety while complementing established firefighting practices.

💡 🚗 Innovative solutions like EV FirePro arise directly from real-world challenges and, combined with the expertise of firefighters, help make electrified transport safer for everyone.

The discussion around electric vehicle fires often highlights how rare they are. But rarity does not mean low risk. ⚠️

EV fires burn hotter, last longer, and are significantly more difficult to extinguish than conventional car fires. 🚗🔥

“Firefighters no longer face isolated car fires, but increasingly complex multi-vehicle incidents,” says Martin Lown BEM, with 30 years of experience in the UK fire service.

🚫 And here’s a crucial point: ceiling sprinklers aren’t enough.
The heat and flames from an EV battery fire are concentrated underneath the vehicle, where sprinkler water can’t reach.

📊 New research from the Fire Safety Research Institute and MSB (Myndigheten för samhällsskydd och beredskap) highlights the urgent need to update firefighting and protection strategies for electric vehicles.

A productive week with industry experts! ⭐️

Over the course of two days, we had the pleasure of taking part in expert discussions focused on both of the solutions we represent:

🔹 Aerosol fire suppression technology
🔹 EV FirePro – an innovative solution for managing electric vehicle fires. 🚗🔥💦

Understanding the perspectives of authorities and experts in different countries regarding fire suppression technologies is essential.

In Finland, aerosol suppression is part of the updated rescue and equipment legislation. The market is also clearly growing in Sweden, especially as demand increases for more environmentally friendly, modular, and cost-effective alternatives to gases containing PHAS substances. 🍀

EV FirePro, on the other hand, is in a league of its own – there’s nothing quite like it. One might compare it to an ”upside-down sprinkler,” but even that doesn’t do it justice. It’s a truly unique innovation, and it was a great pleasure to present it together with EV Fire Protection

🔥 SER-kierrätys / Recycling Takes Fire Safety Seriously – Over 50 E-Waste Containers Protected by Spider

The Finnish producer responsibility organization for electrical and electronic equipment, SER, has taken a major step toward fire safety by equipping e-waste containers across Finland with Salgrom Spider automatic fire suppression units - including the ecoStation in Ivalo, Lapland (shown in video).

🚨 In a live fire test, a container filled with 2,500 kg of e-waste, including lithium-ion battery-powered devices, was successfully suppressed by Spider without reignition. Spider has also passed Eurofins’ rigorous container fire testing under various scenarios.

🔋 Damaged or fully charged battery-powered devices are increasingly common in e-waste containers - posing fast-developing and high-heat fire risks, especially when located near retail stores.
