NordGen Nordgen works to secure genetic diversity for agriculture and forestry in the Nordic countries.

NordGen’s primary task is to contribute to securing the broad diversity of genetic resources linked to food and agriculture. This is done through conservation and sustainable use, solid documentation and information work and international agreements. The efforts are costly and for this reason the Nordic countries have opted for a joint Nordic solution, although each country also maintains a national program.

🌱 Framtidens livsmedelsförsörjning börjar i växtförädlingen

🌱 The future of food security starts with plant breeding

How will our societies' preparedness be affected as climate change and geopolitical disruptions put food supply systems under increasing pressure? At last week's Seeds of Resilience conference, one message stood out clearly: future resilience depends on both faster development of resilient crops and stronger Nordic cooperation.

Over three days, researchers, plant breeders, policymakers, and industry representatives from across the Nordic region gathered in Malmö to discuss how we can strengthen food systems for the future. Three key messages emerged:

▶ Nordic cooperation is a strategic necessity
Biodiversity, genetic resources, and food security cannot be safeguarded by any one country alone. The challenges are shared, and the solutions must be shared too.

▶ Genetic diversity is a preparedness issue
Access to plant genetic resources is essential for developing crops that can withstand increasingly unpredictable environments, deliver high yields with fewer inputs, and contribute to nutritious food production.

▶ Plant breeding is already delivering tangible results
From disease-resistant cereals to more sustainable protein crops, research demonstrates that investments in plant breeding generate benefits both in the field and across society.

This week, the Seed Vault was in the spotlight both in Malmö, Sweden, and in Oviedo, Spain. During the 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲, Professor Emeritus Roland von Bothmer (NordGen/SLU) talked about his experiences during the early years of the Seed Vault.

Some hours earlier, NordGen’s Executive Director, Lene Krøl Andersen, participated in a press conference together with Nils Kristen Sandtrøen, Minister of Agriculture and Food of Norway and Stefan Schmitz, Executive Director of the Crop Trust.

During this event, the Seed Vault partners announced that the Government of Norway, NordGen and the Crop Trust are donating the €50,000 prize accompanying the 2026 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗔𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗶𝗮𝘀 𝗔𝘄𝗮𝗿𝗱 for International Cooperation to the Emergency Reserve for Genebank Collections at Risk.

This initiative is jointly administered by FAO’s International Plant Treaty and the Crop Trust and with the aim of supporting genebanks in need of emergency support. Since 2021, it has supported interventions in 12 countries.

“The Seed Vault is a remarkable example of what international cooperation can achieve. Every deposit represents years of work by the genebanks that conserve these collections. This funding will help more of them take that important step of securing a backup in Svalbard, strengthening the global system that protects our shared crop diversity”, said Lene Krøl Andersen, Executive Director of NordGen.

Earlier during the week, NordGen’s Seed Vault Coordinator, Fuad Gaši also attended several events, for example at the University of Oviedo.

🌾 How do we build resilient food systems in a changing climate?

A recurring message throughout Day 1 of the 𝗦𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗼𝗳 𝗥𝗲𝘀𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗖𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗲𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 was that resilience depends on three things: genetic diversity, systems thinking, and collaboration.

As Lise Lykke Steffensen and Beatrix Alsanius from SLU said, resilience is about more than preserving genetic resources. According to Steffensen, "resilience cannot be achieved on science alone. It requires cooperation and trust," while Alsanius noted that “the challenge is not only to conserve resilient seeds, but to build the systems in which resilience can grow."

Building on these remarks, Day 2 of the conference continued to shed light on ways for future-proofing the world's food systems. For instance, discussions focused on the role of wild species that are related to crops and on bridging public research and commercial breeding.

Among other speakers, Nigel Maxted, University of Birmingham, emphasised that 𝗰𝗿𝗼𝗽 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗶𝘃𝗲𝘀 hold the diversity needed to make us more prepared for food shortage risks.

Also, Muath Alsheikh, Graminor, highlighted the significance of the 𝗡𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗰 𝗣𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰-𝗣𝗿𝗶𝘃𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝗣𝗮𝗿𝘁𝗻𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗲-𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, which strength lies in bringing complementary expertise together to address challenges no single breeding company can solve alone.

Looking forward, the importance of the 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗰𝗵𝗲𝗿𝘀 has been clear during the event. Their ability to bring new ideas, question established assumptions, and shape the resilient food systems of tomorrow is vital. It has been encouraging to see early-career scientists take centre stage through this year's poster sessions and scientific discussions.

More than 16,000 seed samples of important agricultural crops were secured in Svalbard when 21 gene banks from around the world participated in the seed deposit.

Among those present was a delegation from Ukraine that has been overseeing the country’s seed deposit in the vault since 2012. The box from the Ukrainian gene bank contained 773 seed samples, including various samples of sunflowers, grains, buckwheat, and forage crops.

“In a time marked by conflict and uncertainty, we need more examples of countries choosing cooperation over division. The fact that Ukraine’s seed collections have now been secured in Svalbard demonstrates the value of long-term international partnerships for protecting biodiversity and future food security. Together we are stronger—this applies both in the Nordic region and the rest of the world,” said Karen Ellemann, Secretary General of the Nordic Council of Ministers, who also attended the deposit ceremony.

🌱 From the genebank to the dinner table

During NordGen's annual staff trip to Denmark, we had the opportunity to lift our gaze from daily tasks and delve into how genetic resources are used, conserved, and developed in practice.

We visited researchers, plant breeders, and, experts in livestock genetics working on everything from clover seed production and plant diseases to precision agriculture and sustainable livestock breeding. A common theme across many of the visits was the ambition to combine productivity, biodiversity, and long-term sustainability.

It was inspiring to see how materials conserved in NordGen's genebank can find their way back to fields, kitchens, and dining tables. Through initiatives like Origenal, new uses, and markets are being created for cultivated plants and landraces, demonstrating that conservation and utilisation go hand in hand.
