📣 SEK 155 million investment in the Wallenberg Centre for Translational and Molecular Medicine (WCMTM) to advance clinical research 🔬

The University of Gothenburg has now been awarded an additional SEK 155 million to strengthen clinical research. This is part of a national strategic initiative by the Knut and Alice Wallenberg Foundation, which will, among other things, enable the recruitment of new clinical research leaders within WCMTM, in collaboration with the Västra Götaland Region. 🤝

“We welcome this long-term investment, which creates excellent opportunities to strengthen clinical and translational research at the University of Gothenburg. Our close collaboration with healthcare providers, built up over many years, is an important reason why this initiative is being made here. Our tradition of excellence and innovation in life sciences strengthens not only western Sweden but also Sweden as a leading international player,” says Vice-Chancellor Malin Broberg.

🌟 The University of Gothenburg, in collaboration with Chalmers, proudly welcomed five of this year’s Nobel laureates, who delivered lectures over the course of three days to students, researchers, and the general public. 🌟

🎤 During three intensive days, the three Nobel Prize laureates in Physics John M. Martinis, Michel H. Devoret, and John Clarke as well as the Nobel laureate in Chemistry, Omar M. Yaghi, and the Nobel laureate in Physiology or Medicine, Shimon Sakaguchi, lectured on their respective fields of research, ranging from the mysteries of quantum mechanics to new molecular architectures and the finely tuned balance of the immune system.

We are immensely proud that the Nobel laureates chose to visit the University of Gothenburg during their stay in Sweden in connection with the Nobel Day. Lectures such as these help to strengthen our academic environment and provide insight into current research of the highest international standard. ✨

Antibiotic resistance is one of the greatest threats to modern healthcare. The Centre for Antibiotic Resistance Research in Gothenburg has shown how research can drive international policy and lead to real-world solutions.

Now, this work is gaining new momentum through long-term funding from the Zachariassén Family Foundation for Research and Other Education.

“Through this investment, the Zachariassén Family Foundation is helping Sweden maintain its strong position and its role as an international leader in the fight against one of the greatest societal challenges of our time. It is important to support a research environment that has already demonstrated international impact,” says Malin Broberg, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg.

On 10 October, the University of Gothenburg hosted a global conference on children's and young people's mental health. The conference was preceded by a round-table discussion attended by H.M. Queen Silvia.

The purpose of the conference was to bring together experts from different scientific disciplines, sectors of society, business, and other stakeholders concerned with the health of children and young people, explained Malin Broberg, Vice-Chancellor of the University of Gothenburg.

– In turbulent times, we need spaces for hope. This conference is such a space, because nothing inspires hope as much as engagement for children and youth. The theme this year is the 35th anniversary of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child. It challenges us not only to recognise children’s rights as a good principle, but to make them a practical reality, every day, for every child.

One of the key speakers at the conference was Anja Huizink, who will assume the Queen Silvia Professorship in Global Child and Adolescent Health on 1 February next year. Her research focuses on two periods in a person's life: pregnancy and the time shortly after birth, and adolescence.

This year's Nobel Prize in Chemistry goes to three laureates who have given the world's chemists a new way to build structures – where the cavities are the key.

“It's a conceptual Nobel Prize. The laureates' approach to chemistry is a bit like that of a builder or architect who wants to create a structure with a particular appearance. The laureates have found a way to define the direction based on the bond between the organic molecule and the metal ion,” says Karl Börjesson, Professor of Physical Chemistry at the University of Gothenburg.

⚡ This year's Nobel Prize in Physics goes to three researchers who have succeeded in scaling up the quantum mechanical phenomenon of tunnelling. The discovery has direct applications in everyday technology, but also in the development of the latest generation of quantum computers.

"The prize winners' electronic circuit behaves like an atom where the energy levels of the electrons are specific, just as quantum mechanics predicts. The researchers were thus able to regulate the quantum mechanical phenomena with electric current. By connecting several such circuits in a system, you have the beginnings of a quantum computer," explains Mats Granath, senior lecturer in physics at the University of Gothenburg.
