Statement by the Sudanese Liberal Youth Union on the Humanitarian Catastrophe in Al-Fashir
After more than two years of siege imposed by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF), the city of Al-Fashir, the capital of the Darfur region, is witnessing one of the darkest and most tragic chapters in its modern history, following its occupation by the Janjaweed militia and the commission of horrific crimes against unarmed civilians.
Thousands of martyrs — including women, children, and the elderly — have been killed in a fully-fledged campaign of ethnic cleansing against the city’s population. Field reports indicate the occurrence of massacres, mass arrests, and the displacement of hundreds of thousands of civilians under extremely harsh humanitarian conditions, amid a total collapse of security, services, and basic needs.
The Sudanese Liberal Youth Union condemns, in the strongest terms, these heinous crimes and grave violations committed by the Janjaweed militia, which constitute blatant breaches of international humanitarian law and amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity.
The Union calls upon the international and regional communities to assume their moral and humanitarian responsibilities regarding what is happening in Darfur by publicly condemning these atrocities, taking urgent action to protect civilians, ensuring the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid to those affected, and bringing all perpetrators of these crimes to justice before international courts.
Furthermore, the Union appeals to all youth movements, political forces, and civil society organizations in Sudan to unite in a sincere and courageous national stance to defend the dignity of the Sudanese people and their right to life, freedom, and peace.
May God have mercy on the martyrs, grant a speedy recovery to the wounded, and bestow patience and comfort upon their families.
May our beloved country be preserved from all harm and evil.
