Sri Lanka Ambassador Invites Riyadh Chamber to Participate in “Sri Lanka Expo 2027”

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia O.L. Ameer Ajwad met with Eng. Abdullah Abdulrahman Al-Obaikan, Chairman of the Riyadh Chamber, and discussed potential areas of cooperation between the private sectors of Sri Lanka and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Briefing the Chairman on recent developments in private-sector engagement between the two countries, including the establishment of the Saudi–Sri Lanka Business Council between the Federation of Saudi Chambers (FSC) and the Federation of Chambers of Commerce and Industry of Sri Lanka (FCCISL), the Ambassador extended an invitation to the Chairman and members of the Riyadh Chamber, which represents a large and influential private-sector network in the Kingdom, to visit Sri Lanka and participate in “Sri Lanka Expo 2027”, scheduled to be held from 14–17 January 2027 in Colombo.

The Ambassador also invited potential investors from the Riyadh Chamber to participate in the “Sri Lanka Economic and Investment Summit”, scheduled to take place on 12–13 October 2026 at the Shangri-La Colombo, to explore the wide range of investment opportunities available in Sri Lanka.

The Ambassador expressed his appreciation to the Riyadh Chamber for its unwavering support for business delegations from Sri Lanka, including facilitating business visits, hosting B2B meetings at the Chamber, and providing opportunities for meaningful engagement between the business communities of the two countries.

Chairman Eng. Al-Obaikan recalled the longstanding historical ties between Saudi Arabia and Sri Lanka and expressed his pleasure at witnessing the growing business relations between the two countries. He also reaffirmed the support of the Riyadh Chamber for Sri Lanka’s trade and investment initiatives, including participation in trade and investment forums, with a view to further strengthening economic, commercial and business relations between the two countries.

Both sides also discussed the proposed visit of a high-level Saudi–Sri Lanka Business Council delegation to Sri Lanka, coinciding with the “Sri Lanka Expo 2027.”

The meeting was attended by Mr. Abdul Hadi Alqarni, Chairman of the Saudi–Sri Lanka Business Council; Mr. Mansour Al-Ajmi, Director of International Relations, Riyadh Chamber as well as Ms. U.G. Damithri Samangika, Second Secretary/Head of Chancery; and Ms. Tashma Vithanawasam, First Secretary (Commerce) of the Embassy of Sri Lanka in Riyadh.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both sides to expanding bilateral trade, investment and business-to-business cooperation, and to further strengthening the longstanding friendship and economic partnership between Sri Lanka and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Sri Lanka Ambassador Ameer Ajwad Meets with the Governor of ZATCA of Saudi Arabia

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia Ameer Ajwad met recently with the Governor of the Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Suhail Abanmi, together with ZATCA senior officials. During the meeting, they discussed areas of bilateral cooperation, including the ratification of the Agreement on the Avoidance of Double Taxation between Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia, as well as tax matters concerning Sri Lanka International Schools in the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Sri Lanka International School in Riyadh, Mr. Mohamed Fahim Mohamed Jiffry, also accompanied the Sri Lanka Ambassador and participated in the meeting.

The Zakat, Tax and Customs Authority (ZATCA) is the Saudi government authority responsible for administering and enforcing zakat, tax and customs regulations in the Kingdom. It oversees areas including VAT, excise tax, customs duties, e-invoicing (Fatoora), zakat compliance and customs procedures, playing an important role in facilitating trade while ensuring compliance with Saudi fiscal and customs laws.

Ambassador Ameer Ajwad Highlights Sri Lanka’s Human Capital Potential at Saudi Arabia’s LEAP26 International Conference on Technology and Innovation

Ambassador of Sri Lanka to the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Ameer Ajwad, participated in Saudi Arabia’s flagship international conference on technology and innovation, LEAP26, held in Riyadh from 31 August to 3 September 2026. Speaking to the Arabic news channel Okaz (عكاظ) at the Conference venue, he highlighted that Sri Lanka is well positioned to complement and partner with Saudi Arabia’s rapidly growing advanced technology ecosystem and contribute skilled human capital, given Sri Lanka’s strong human capital base and leading position in South Asia.

Ambassador also stated that LEAP26 provides an important platform for strengthening international partnerships and exploring opportunities for cooperation in technology, innovation, artificial intelligence, entrepreneurship and digital development. The Conference witnessed the announcement of investments, partnerships and new launches valued around USD 15 billion in the fields of artificial intelligence and advanced technologies. He appreciated the opportunity to participate in this significant international gathering and to observe first-hand the Kingdom’s dynamic technology and innovation ecosystem.

The participation of leading global companies specialising in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, cloud computing, robotics, emerging technologies and technology-driven investment underscored Saudi Arabia’s emergence as a global hub for technology and innovation.

LEAP26 reflects Saudi Arabia’s ambitious transformation agenda under Saudi Vision 2030, bringing together leading technology companies, governments, investors, startups, researchers, entrepreneurs and innovators from around the world. The Conference provides a global platform for dialogue, collaboration and investment across the rapidly evolving technology sector.

Sri Lanka’s Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment Meets with Saudi Counterpart on the Sidelines of 65th Anniversary of Non-Aligned Movement in Belgrade

The Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Foreign Employment of Sri Lanka, Arun Hemachandra, met with the Vice Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Waleed bin Abdulkarim El-Khereiji, on the sidelines of the High-Level Commemorative Meeting marking the 65th Anniversary of the First Conference of Heads of State or Government of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), held in Belgrade, Serbia, on 01 September 2026.

Both sides held cordial and constructive discussions on further strengthening the longstanding bilateral relations between Sri Lanka and the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia and exchanged views on enhancing cooperation in areas of mutual interest.

The meeting reaffirmed the commitment of both countries to further deepen bilateral cooperation and continue close collaboration in regional and international forums.

Sri Lanka and Saudi Arabia are founding members of the NAM, which was established in Belgrade in 1961.
