MPA Day | 1 August
Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) and Other Effective area-based Conservation Measures (OECMs) - other well-managed areas that help conserve marine life - safeguard biodiversity, sustain fisheries, strengthen climate resilience and support a healthy Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Our region is one of the most biologically unique on the planet - home to vibrant coral reefs, mangroves, seagrass beds and a high proportion of species found nowhere else on Earth. But to sustain these benefits, MPAs and OECMs must be effectively managed, connected and maintained over the long term. That is central to conserving at least 30% of the ocean by 2030.
This MPA Day, PERSGA supports its member states' efforts to reaffirm their commitment to reach this goal by strengthening regional cooperation, policy and the effective management of MPAs and OECMs across the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden.
Together, we protect our sea.
