The Government revises coffee farm gate price.

Effective 24th January 2020, the farm gate price for coffee ripened cherries was set at FRW216 per Kilogramme, up from FRW190 that was set in October 2019. For floating coffee will be sold at FRW100 minimum per Kilogramme.

The farm gate price is set after the National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) consults stakeholders in the Rwandan coffee sector. This meeting had been held on 21st January 2020 at NAEB headquarters in Kigali. When setting the price, the gathering considered production costs and other attendant costs and prices at international market. They were guided by prices at New York Commodities Market.

For instance, the unit price of one Kilogramme increased by 9% comparing the current to the previous season.

From July to December 2019, Rwanda exported 15,423 Metric Tons to earn US$ 49.5 million. In the same period of 2018, 13,678 Metric Tons had been exported to generate US$ 48.5 million.

This new price is expected to boost farmers’ morale, help improve production and attract more people into coffee growing. Farmers’ representatives at the meeting said that it will increase household income of farmers.

Rwandan coffee main buyers include Switzerland, United Kingdom, United States, South Africa, Nigeria, Germany and South Korea, among others.

Tea cooperatives get farm-cars from the Government

The Government of Rwanda through Project for Rural Income through Exports (PRICE), a partner of National Agriculture Export Development Board (NAEB) donated three tea harvesting trucks and five ploughing tractors worth FRW387,251,000.

Beneficiary cooperatives are COTHEGA, COOTHEMUKI, COTHEGAB, TUTHEGROC and KOTECOGRO operating from southern and western provinces of Rwanda.

The donation comes at a time when tea plantations expansion is starting to yield. “These three trucks will resolve an issue of some unconditional feeder roads and long distances covered by tea pluckers while taking tea green leaves from plantations to processing factories.” Said Karamaga Francis, the representative of Rwandan Tea Cooperatives Federation. “The ploughing tractors will support farmers to easy their daily works and lower production cost.” Karamaga added.

From July to December 2019, Rwanda exported 14,781 Metric Tons earning US$42,316,934 while during the same period of the previous year (2018) only 14,201 Metric Tons had been exported to generate US$39,215,566.

BB and Daughters Ltd Providing Quality Natural Rwandan Honey

What started like a search for an alternative from sugar consumption led Bright Batamuriza the Director of BB and Daughters Ltd to start a honey processing firm. BB and Daughters Ltd processes natural Rwandan Honey.

Located in Nyarugunga sector, Kicukiro district, the company started operations in 2017, it is now a household name with her products distributed allover major super markets in Kigali and also consumed by leading hotels and Restaurants like Marriot Hotel, Serena Hotel, Ubumwe Hotel, Manor Hotel, Camellia Restaurant, Javas Restaurant to mention but a few and also exported to Kenya, Ethiopia and Eritrea.

Quality is at the Centre of all BB and Daughters Ltd operations as Ms Batamuriza notes:

‘‘Honey is a food, its quality and overall hygiene is very paramount to human health, at BB we take extra caution when handling our honey throughout the whole value chain. For starters we make sure we buy honey from only farmers and cooperatives that are certified by MINAGRI. We also take precaution on the hygiene from the farmer, to our receiving area at the factory, storage, to processing, packaging and dispatching to our clients.’’

BB and Daughters honey products have been granted the RSB quality mark (S-Mark). The certification means a lot to Ms Batamuliza as this is attestation to their pursuit for quality and adherence to quality. The S-Mark certification opened doors for them, they are able to supply to leading hotels for example because they are trusted and proven.

‘‘With the S-Mark now, our next step is getting the HACCP certificate and certificate of registration by the United States Food and Drug Administration (US FDA). We believe since our honey is natural it will enable us export to Europe and Asian markets. Our Government has created a conducive environment for us to thrive as the private sector, it has sought partnerships for us to seek better markets, what is now required of us as the private sector is to seize the opportunities. We are now focused on being HACCP certified and also getting the US FDA certificate.’’ Ms Batamuliza emphasizes.

BB and Daughters is proud to contribute to national development. It offers employment to Rwandans both directly and indirectly.

However, Ms Batamuliza says overall they are still faced with a challenge of mindset change where some people still think imported products are better than local products. She is optimistic that with increased sensitization, this stereotype will go away and with the newly introduced protected Made in Rwanda Logo which is to be issued by RSB, this will be eventually overcome.

‘’Rwanda as a brand is known for quality and delivering on her promises. We believe the new Made in Rwanda Logo issued by RSB will be a strong branding tool for our products on the international market and it will also protect our products from being counterfeited.’’ She adds.

Under the forth Strategic Plan for Agriculture Transformation (PSTA4), Rwanda targets to increase honey production to 8,000 tons per year by 2024.

Rwandan tea green leaf prices revised

On the 13th December 2019, Honorable Minister of Agriculture & Animal Resources, Dr. MUKESHIMANA Gerardine presided over a meeting in Kigali, gathering representatives of Rwanda Tea Association, Rwanda Tea Processing Factories and Rwanda Tea Farmers Cooperatives.
On the agenda, the meeting was to discuss needed changes in the pricing of tea green leaf, strategies to enhance tea productivity and impact of the tea pricing on parties, meaning farmers and tea processing factories.

The meeting was in line with the decision of the Cabinet meeting that took place on the 14th November 2012 and introduced the tea green leaf pricing formula in Rwanda. The farmer’s take home price would base on processed tea price on international markets.

The meeting resolutions include the cancellation of fees that used to be deducted from a farmer in certain occasions and in other cases. The percentage of the money given to a tea farmer increased to 50% from 40% of the price of the made tea price at international market.

On this ten percent increase, a farmer will be given five percent 5% and the remaining five percent 5% will be invested in the projects that enhance productivity and a more refined tea.

Rwandan flowers to get more markets through The Netherlands’ flora hub

The Netherlands, worlds biggest flower market place and the largest contributor to Rwandan Flower exports (98%), will host the 10th edition of the biggest Floriculture trade fair in the world, “International Floriculture Trade Fair (IFTF). This is a three day trade fair that brings together the world’s floriculture industry, to promote fresh flowers and plants, while aiming at increasing production and consumption.

This year, Rwanda will be participating in IFTF for the 3rd time scheduled for 6th – 8th November 2019; participating in such an event is vital in the growth and promotion of our floriculture sector as a nation. The outcome of Rwandan delegates’ attendance to the IFTF has greatly influenced sales of Rwandan flowers through the Netherlands flower auction market.

The IFTF experience has also oriented the companies to improve their production area. The floriculture sector in Rwanda grew to become one of business deals attracting new investors due to market opportunities of the cash crop.

A delegation of two Rwandan flower growing companies (Bella Flowers and Bloom Hills) accompanied by National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) person in charge of Export Market Development and Innovation will attend this event.

Ms. Cynthia UWACU, the representative of NAEB at IFTF 2019 says that the fair is an opportunity for the Rwandan delegation to create international market linkages between Rwandan roses and summer flowers producers and international buyers. “We are here to create awareness of the ‘Rwandafresh’ brand on the global market”. She confirmed.

Mr. Shungo Harada, the Managing Director of Bloom Hills Company added that they chose to participate with an aim to interact with buyers, learn about prevailing market trends and understand the dynamics in the floriculture auction market.

The attendance of the Rwandan delegates in the IFTF will be an opportunity to draw lessons about “flower branding and tourism” from the Netherlands and replicate in Rwanda. The delegates’ participation in the IFTF 2019 will be guided by the vision “Enhanced Sales through Flower Branding and Tourism”.

The current production acreage of flowers in Rwanda is targeting to be expanded from 40 to more than 500 hectares in 2050. This why to sustain the projected increase in production will require equal initiatives in creating market links through the Netherlands market and flower hub.

What Golden Barista Champions got from AFCA Barista Boot Camp

During the African Specialty Coffee Expo launched today 30th October 2019, the Barista Boot Camp was one of major providers of the way forward for coffee domestic consumption culture in Africa – this will be a story for another day.

Rwandan three professional barista shared with us tips gained from a two-day boot camp attended to get prepared for the Barista competition to be held in February 2020 in Mombasa, Kenya:

“We learnt that getting ahead in the world of coffee requires hard work, dedication, a willingness to learn and no small measure of skills when it comes to serving that [coffee] elusive perfect cup.” Says Uwase Liliane, coffee barista from Baso Patissier, a coffee shop in Kigali.

There are no short cuts, but there are some fast tracks. For café owners and hospitality business managers are viewed as a highly attractive proposition if you possess the skills and knowledge demanded of a modern-day Barista.

“The Barista Boot Camp course was designed to be fast track; therefore it was intensive, hands-on and demanded a high level of focus from each student. Top line Baristas are highly skilled and highly sought after. This is why we fully engage ourselves in this art.” Ms. Uwase added.

Mr. Kertus Tony, a Chief Barista from Crema Coffee Shop in Musanze District said that there’s a huge amount to learn and it’s no exaggeration to say that in the coffee business you never stop learning. “The Barista Boot Camp course was structured in a logical, progressive and supportive manner that’s designed to bring out the best in any us and inspire confidence in our own abilities.”

“We employ a “try, test and apply” approach to developing your skills in a course that’s based on decades of professional experience in the coffee industry.” Mrs. Nandi Jordan, Chief Operations Officer at AFCA clarified.

“I learnt how to achieve the correct grind to make the perfect espresso coffee and explain how and why particle size is such a critical factor in this process.” Says Mushumba Benson, a barista from Bourbon Coffee shop.

They also learnt how to prepare a cup of filter coffee to the Speciality Coffee Association’s gold cup standard. Next, we learn how to prepare and deliver single coffee orders using a variety of brew methods.

They leant that being a Barista requires more than technical abilities. The importance of these “softer” skills should not be underestimated as employers will be looking for a certain mindset and a strong work ethic as well as an ability to interact positively with colleagues and customers alike.

Such practical skills and many more are said to add value to any Barista as a potential employee in the eyes of any coffee catering employer. They have a variety of equipment which will typically encounter in a coffee environment, helping ensure they are fully prepared to enter the workplace.

Alongside these three Rwandan Baristas, six more participants from the region ensured that they got the maximum package they wanted in their daily business but most importantly to contest for the competition that will precede the AFCA Conference and Exhibition slated from 12th to 14th February 2020 in Mombasa, Kenya.

Rwanda showcases its coffee in AFCA; Zanzibar, Tanzania

From 28th to 31st October 2019, on its 18th time, Rwanda is participating in the African Fine Coffee Conference and Exhibition.

The conference and exhibition features series of events organized by the African Fine Coffee Association (AFCA) every year since 2002 to gather coffee stakeholders from across the globe, especially Africa, to communicate stories behind their coffees, address challenges that hinder the sector and explore available opportunities to expand the coffee markets.

In February 2019 Rwanda hosted the major AFCA Conference and Exhibition. One of the resolutions taken from this event was to promote domestic consumption. It is against this point that this year, AFCA has convened its first African Specialty Coffee Expo in Zanzibar, Tanzania under the theme ‘Domestic consumption in Africa and AFCA barista retreat.’

It is an ideal platform for National Agricultural Export Development Board (NAEB) to take the national coffee brand to another level. Three coffee exporters and one official from NAEB have attended this event to exhibit the Rwandan Specialty Coffee.

This year’s theme accurately matches the need for Rwanda to promote the domestic coffee consumption. This is why, on its first time, the country through its partnership with JICA’s CUP Rwanda project has sent three professional baristas to pursue a series of trainings and competitions meant to improve their technical capabilities in making quality great-tasting coffee beverages that will ultimately increase local consumption of Rwandan coffee, hence growth of the sector.

It is expected that the Rwandan delegation will learn and seal deals with some of international stakeholders who include international importers, transporters and trade representatives.

Additionally, the event will be a chance for them to access information on different innovations and technologies the country’s sector to be more standardized with the entire global specialty markets.
