During 3 years of YEAN intervention, maize yields increased by 71%, while rice yields increased by 73% under OMIS project.

Today, YEAN presented the achievements of the Q4 of Year3 implementation for the Operation and Management of Irrigation Schemes (OMIS) project, implemented in partnership with .

Under Lot 3, covering , , and , YEAN provides daily proximity coaching to farmers and Irrigation Water Users Organizations to strengthen irrigation scheme management and improve agricultural productivity. The lot covers 21,296 farmers, 14 irrigation schemes, 1,179 hectares, and 17 farmer cooperatives.

Over the three-year implementation period (2023-2026), OMIS has driven significant gains in crop productivity across Lot 3. Average maize yield rose from a 4.15 t/ha baseline in 2023 to 7.11 t/ha in 2026, with Ruboroga scheme, the top performer, reaching 9.0 t/ha. Average rice yield increased from 3.44 t/ha to 5.96 t/ha over the same period, with Base I&II scheme leading at 6.3 t/ha.

These results reflect the impact of sustained farmer coaching, stronger irrigation management, and improved agricultural practices on scheme performance.

🇷🇼🇯🇵 Strengthening Irrigation Management Through Learning from Japan

Through the Water Management and Capacity Building (WAMCAB2) project, our Executive Secretary successfully completed the Knowledge Co-Creation Program (KCCP) in Japan alongside senior Rwanda Agriculture and Animal Resources Development BoardI RAB officials, station managers, core counterparts and other key service providers supporting the implementation of the WAMCAB2 Project.

Organized by , the training came at an important time. Baseline surveys and capacity assessments identified key challenges affecting irrigation management, including financial management, Water Service Fees (WSF) collection, operation and maintenance, and stakeholder coordination.

Through policy dialogues with Japan’s Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF), local governments, Land Improvement Districts, agricultural cooperatives, JICA and other institutions, as well as practical visits to irrigation schemes and related organizations, participants gained valuable insights into Japan’s experience in sustainable irrigation management and agricultural extension.

For YEAN, this learning is particularly valuable as we continue contributing to WAMCAB2 implementation throughout our partner WATER USERS ORGANIZATION. The knowledge gained will help strengthen our approach to WAMCAB approach dissemination, improve water management, support capacity building, and promote more sustainable and effective irrigation management systems in Rwanda.

A special appreciation to and the Government of Japan for their continued commitment and great collaboration in supporting Rwanda’s agricultural transformation. 🇯🇵🤝🇷🇼 The opportunity to learn from Japan’s experience is a valuable investment in strengthening Rwanda’s capacity to build more productive, resilient and sustainable agricultural systems.

EASTERN PROVINCE EXPO 2026

YEAN has been recognized as the Best Agriculture and Livestock Exhibitor at the PSF East Province Expo 2026 in . The recognition is a great reflection of our continued commitment to supporting farmers, young people and agribusinesses with practical agricultural knowledge, services and opportunities.

During the Expo, we engaged with hundreds of visitors, listened to their needs, shared solutions and connected them to opportunities across the agricultural value chain. We are grateful to the Governor of the Eastern Province, the Mayor of Kayonza District, PSF, our partners and everyone who visited our stand and contributed to making the Expo a success.

Most importantly, the Expo reaffirmed a lesson we strongly believe in: when we get closer to people, listen to them and connect them to opportunities, we build trust, partnerships and new possibilities.
