Election Day, 13 September 2026

General elections – for national, regional and local representation – are held every four years. The 349 members of the Swedish parliament are elected by and represent the people. Voter turnout is normally 80–90 per cent.

Sweden is widely ranked as one of the top functioning and most robust liberal democracies globally, frequently scoring near the very top of international democracy indices.

Happy National Day! 🇸🇪

Sweden celebrates its National Day on 6 June, honouring two important moments in Swedish history: the election of Gustav Vasa as King of Sweden in 1523 and the adoption of a new constitution in 1809, which helped lay the foundations of modern Swedish democracy.

The National Day is a moment to reflect on the values Sweden seeks to live in practice: openness, equality, innovation, sustainability, responsibility and cooperation.
