A Ribeira da Janela foi pioneira na caça à baleia?

Entre 1940 e 1945, antes da mudança para o Caniçal, a 'fábrica' provisória da Companhia Açoriana instalou-se na foz da Ribeira da Janela. Ainda restam alguns sinais dessa atividade.

As instalações temporárias para a transformação dos Cetáceos, foram erguidas na foz da Ribeira da Janela, onde ainda hoje é visível um pequeno furado. O túnel foi escavado na pedra mole para servir de passagem para a banda do calhau, em frente aos Ilhéus da Ribeira da Janela.

Também como vestígio e reminiscência dessa atividade, a vigia das baleias e a vereda que lhe dá acesso, no Porto Moniz estrategicamente localizada para poder observar a maior área de mar e avistar os Cetáceos.
O óleo extraído dos cachalotes seria o motor para uma indústria que subsistiu no Arquipélago por mais de 40 anos.

Ribeira da Janela pioneered on whaling?

Between 1940 and 1945, before the change to the reed beds, the ' provisional ' factory of the Azorean Company settled at the mouth of Ribeira da Janela. There are some signs of this activity.

Temporary facilities for the transformation of cetaceans, were erected at the mouth of Ribeira da Janela, where still today is visible a little bored. The tunnel was dug in the soft rock to serve as a passage for the band do calhau, in front of the Islanders of the Ribeira da Janela.

As well as trace and reminiscence of this activity, the lookout of whales and the path that gives you access, in Porto Moniz strategically located to be able to observe the largest area of sea and spotting cetaceans.
The oil extracted from s***m whales would be the engine for an industry that subsisted in the archipelago for more than 40 years.
