Our ASIS (Ambulance Support and Information System)

We are able to optimise emergency assistance by collaborating with emergency services (INEM, Bombeiros, and the Red Cross (Cruz Vermelha). Patients can be assisted by using digital satellite maps that are mapped with driving routes that are exact. Rescue workers also have access to information about any illnesses, allergies, and/or drugs being taken, which could be critical in a life-threatening emergency. These considerations are critical for a successful rescue. Our emergency hotline (808 911 # # #) is also open 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to requestverbal translation services in six languages.

This week, when Jordan (name changed for confidentiality) reached out to check on his subscription, he included a P.S. that truly brightened our day.

Last October, Jordan had a bike crash on a deserted country road northeast of Tavira. Alone and injured, he used the 𝗶𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀 𝗮𝗽𝗽. Thanks to his complete and up-to-date profile information, our team was able to pinpoint his exact location, coordinate with local emergency services, and ensure an ambulance reached him quickly. This allowed him to receive prompt medical attention, and we were able to relay any relevant information regarding his medical conditions and medications.

Knowing that he is safe, recovered, and planning a big hike this autumn with the iMergencies app again is a testament to why we do what we do.

Accidents happen in a split second, especially when you're out exploring. But having a lifeline that speaks your language 🇵🇹 🇬🇧 🇩🇪 🇳🇱 🇪🇸 🇫🇷 can make all the difference.

If you enjoy venturing into the stunning landscapes of mainland Portugal, Madeira, or the Azores, please don’t leave your safety to chance.

Last Saturday, a couple of our Algarve team members attended the Saar at Home - Homecare Agency 5-year anniversary celebration at the Magnolia Hotel. It was a pleasure to meet so many people, celebrate this milestone with Saar@Home, and share insights about our emergency support service for the expat community in Portugal.

We have collaborated with Hilde and the Saar at Home team for a long time, and witnessing their organization grow over the years while consistently raising the standard of care in the region has been genuinely impressive. Congratulations to Hilde and everyone involved on five meaningful years, and here’s to what comes next.🥂

𝗩𝗶𝘀𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗽

We truly value opportunities like this to connect with the community face to face. If you’re part of an expat meetup, club, or association in the Algarve, we’d be glad to join you or welcome you at our office.

It’s a relaxed way to meet the team, learn how iMergencies supports people in real emergency situations, and ask any questions you might have, with no pressure at all.

Very high temperatures are expected again across Portugal, which for many people will simply mean a few uncomfortable days. However, for older adults and anyone living with long term health conditions, heat can place extra strain on the body. 𝗔𝘀 𝘄𝗲 𝗮𝗴𝗲, 𝗶𝘁 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗱𝗲𝗿 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝘁𝗲 𝘁𝗲𝗺𝗽𝗲𝗿𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗲𝗮𝘀𝗶𝗲𝗿 𝘁𝗼 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲 𝗱𝗲𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗮𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻𝗮𝗹𝘀 𝗻𝗮𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗲𝗻.

Some medicines can also increase sensitivity to heat or fluid loss. These include diuretics (water tablets), blood pressure medication, antihistamines, antidepressants, antipsychotics, and medication for Parkinson’s disease. 𝗧𝗵𝗲𝘀𝗲 𝘀𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗹𝗱 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗯𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗲𝗱, 𝗯𝘂𝘁 𝗲𝘅𝘁𝗿𝗮 𝗰𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿, 𝘀𝗼 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗮 𝗴𝗼𝗼𝗱 𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗮 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗮𝗸 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗰𝘁𝗼𝗿 𝗼𝗿 𝗽𝗵𝗮𝗿𝗺𝗮𝗰𝗶𝘀𝘁.

𝗪𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗻𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳𝘁𝗲𝗻 𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗱. When temperatures stay high overnight, the body does not fully cool down. This means you may start the next day already tired, even before the heat builds again. Over several days, this can lead to fatigue, dizziness, dehydration, and extra strain on the heart and kidneys.
𝗧𝗵𝗶𝗿𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗮𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻. Many older adults are already mildly dehydrated before they feel thirsty.
A simple check at home is urine colour. 𝗗𝗮𝗿𝗸 𝘆𝗲𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗼𝗿 𝗮𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝗯𝗲 𝗮𝗻 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘀𝗶𝗴𝗻 𝗼𝗳 𝗱𝗲𝗵𝘆𝗱𝗿𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻.
Early signs of heat stress can include 𝘂𝗻𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗱𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗺𝗶𝗹𝗱 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗲, 𝗱𝗶𝘇𝘇𝗶𝗻𝗲𝘀𝘀 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗻 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗶𝗿𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗮𝗯𝗶𝗹𝗶𝘁𝘆, 𝗼𝗿 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗾𝘂𝗶𝘁𝗲 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳. Some people may also feel slightly confused or find it harder to concentrate.
These signs matter, as they often appear before more serious symptoms develop.

𝗦𝗼, 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗱𝗼 𝘁𝗼 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹?
• 𝗗𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗿𝗲𝗴𝘂𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆, even if you don’t feel thirsty. Small, frequent amounts work better than drinking a lot at once and help prevent dehydration.
• 𝗘𝗮𝘁 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁 𝗺𝗲𝗮𝗹𝘀, such as fruit, vegetables, yoghurt, and soups. These support hydration and are easier for your body to handle in high temperatures.
• 𝗔𝘃𝗼𝗶𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗰𝗼𝗵𝗼𝗹 𝗶𝗻 𝗵𝗼𝘁 𝘄𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗽𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗯𝗹𝗲, as it increases fluid loss. Try to limit caffeine, especially later in the day.
• 𝗪𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗹𝗼𝗼𝘀𝗲, 𝗹𝗶𝗴𝗵𝘁-𝗰𝗼𝗹𝗼𝘂𝗿𝗲𝗱 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴, preferably in natural fabrics like cotton or linen, which help your body stay cooler.
• At home, 𝗸𝗲𝗲𝗽 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝗯𝘆 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘀𝗵𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗼𝗿 𝗰𝘂𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗹𝘆 𝗶𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗱𝗮𝘆 𝗯𝗲𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝘂𝗻 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁𝘀 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗿𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀. During the hottest hours, keep windows closed if the outside air is warmer, and open them again in the evening or early morning when it cools down.
• If your home becomes too warm, use simple cooling methods such as fans, a 𝗱𝗮𝗺𝗽 𝗰𝗹𝗼𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝗻 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗻𝗲𝗰𝗸, wrists, or ankles, or a lukewarm shower. Rest in the coolest room available, and if your home has more than one floor, 𝘀𝘁𝗮𝘆 𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗴𝗿𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱 𝗳𝗹𝗼𝗼𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗲𝗿𝗲 𝗶𝘁 𝗶𝘀 𝘂𝘀𝘂𝗮𝗹𝗹𝘆 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿.
• If needed, 𝘀𝗽𝗲𝗻𝗱 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝗶𝗻 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹𝗲𝗿 𝗽𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗶𝗰 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗶𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴, such as shopping centres, libraries, or museums, or make use of sea breezes if you are near the coast.

𝗠𝗼𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆, 𝗽𝗮𝘆 𝗮𝘁𝘁𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘁𝗼 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗯𝗼𝗱𝘆. 𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗳𝗲𝗲𝗹 𝘂𝗻𝘄𝗲𝗹𝗹, 𝘀𝘁𝗼𝗽 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗹 𝗽𝗹𝗮𝗰𝗲, 𝗱𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝘄𝗮𝘁𝗲𝗿, 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗮𝗹𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗳 𝘁𝗶𝗺𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗿𝗲𝗰𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿. 𝗜𝗳 𝘀𝘆𝗺𝗽𝘁𝗼𝗺𝘀 𝗱𝗼𝗻’𝘁 𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗿𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗿 𝗴𝗲𝘁 𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘀𝗲, 𝘀𝗲𝗲𝗸 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗱𝘃𝗶𝗰𝗲.

As an independent B&B host, you provide a unique, warm, and personal home-from-home experience that larger hotels cannot replicate. However, this personal touch can also mean that when a guest faces an emergency at 3 a.m., the responsibility often falls on you.

Language barriers, heightened emotions, and the challenge of accurately describing a rural or unfamiliar location to emergency services can turn a medical incident into a stressful situation for both you and your guests.

We are 𝗶𝗠𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗶𝗲𝘀. For the past 16 years, we’ve acted as a dedicated 24/7 safety net across Portugal, connecting international visitors with local emergency services, and partnering with GuestHouse owners to ensure professional help is available instantly when a guest faces a crisis.

Why B&Bs choose us:

➡️ 𝟮𝟰/𝟳 𝗺𝘂𝗹𝘁𝗶𝗹𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗽𝗼𝗻𝘀𝗲: We communicate directly with your guests in their language 🇬🇧 🇵🇹 🇫🇷 🇩🇪 🇪🇸 🇳🇱.

➡️ 𝗖𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗿𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗲𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗱 𝘆𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲𝗿𝘁𝘆: Our service supports guests anywhere in Portugal, from your accommodation to day trips and excursions.

➡️ 𝗗𝗶𝗿𝗲𝗰𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗼𝗿𝗱𝗶𝗻𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝟭𝟭𝟮: We liaise with Portuguese emergency services, sharing precise GPS locations and key medical information immediately.

➡️ 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗼𝗻𝗴𝗲𝗿 𝗴𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗳𝗶𝗱𝗲𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗿𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄𝘀: Guests feel safer and more supported, increasing their likelihood of booking again when they know help is always available.

Two flexible options designed to suit your business:

1. 𝗚𝘂𝗲𝘀𝘁-𝗹𝗲𝗱 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 (no cost to you): Leave our leaflet in the rooms, allowing guests to subscribe directly for access to our SOS app for extra peace of mind during their stay.

2. 𝗛𝗼𝘀𝘁-𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗹𝘂𝘀𝗶𝘃𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻: Include our service within your booking as a premium safety feature, giving your property a clear point of difference in a competitive market.

“𝙃𝙤𝙣𝙚𝙨𝙩𝙡𝙮, 𝙄’𝙢 𝙛𝙞𝙣𝙚, 𝙄 𝙙𝙤𝙣’𝙩 𝙣𝙚𝙚𝙙 𝙤𝙣𝙚 𝙤𝙛 𝙩𝙝𝙤𝙨𝙚 𝙩𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜𝙨.”

Does this sound familiar when you speak to your parents?

It is completely natural. They want to keep their independence, and the last thing you want is to make them feel like they are losing it.

But as a son or daughter, there are often small moments that make you pause when the phone rings.

So when is it actually the right time to talk about a personal alarm?

It is rarely because of one big emergency. It is usually the little things you start to notice over time:

▶️ If they have had a fall or near miss they quickly brush off
▶️ A new health diagnosis
▶️ Struggling with mobility
▶️ Living alone, where a simple slip could leave them stuck for hours
▶️ Moments of forgetfulness or hesitation about going out alone
▶️ Vision getting slightly worse, making everyday movement less safe

Bringing it up takes sensitivity. The key is helping your folks understand that a personal alarm is not about losing independence. It is about keeping it, with the reassurance that help is there whenever they need it.

A new study published in Innovation in Ageing suggests that 𝗲𝗻𝗴𝗮𝗴𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗮𝗿𝘁𝘀 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗰𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 𝗺𝗮𝘆 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗯𝗶𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗴𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗮𝗴𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴, 𝘄𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗯𝗲𝗻𝗲𝗳𝗶𝘁𝘀 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗽𝗮𝗿𝗮𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗼 𝗽𝗵𝘆𝘀𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝘅𝗲𝗿𝗰𝗶𝘀𝗲.

Researchers found that both how often people take part, and how varied their cultural activities are, makes a real difference. From reading and music to galleries and singing, it’s the combination of stimulation, emotion and social connection that seems to matter most.

As Dr Feifei Bu explained:
“𝘖𝘶𝘳 𝘴𝘵𝘶𝘥𝘺 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘴 𝘵𝘩𝘦 𝘧𝘪𝘳𝘴𝘵 𝘦𝘷𝘪𝘥𝘦𝘯𝘤𝘦 𝘵𝘩𝘢𝘵 𝘢𝘳𝘵𝘴 𝘢𝘯𝘥 𝘤𝘶𝘭𝘵𝘶𝘳𝘢𝘭 𝘦𝘯𝘨𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘮𝘦𝘯𝘵 𝘪𝘴 𝘭𝘪𝘯𝘬𝘦𝘥 𝘵𝘰 𝘢 𝘴𝘭𝘰𝘸𝘦𝘳 𝘱𝘢𝘤𝘦 𝘰𝘧 𝘣𝘪𝘰𝘭𝘰𝘨𝘪𝘤𝘢𝘭 𝘢𝘨𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨. In short: creativity might be doing more for your body than you think.

There is nothing quite like the freedom of touring Portugal in a caravan.

But when you are off the beaten track, things can change fast. 𝗔 𝗺𝗲𝗱𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹 𝗲𝗺𝗲𝗿𝗴𝗲𝗻𝗰𝘆. A 𝗯𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝗿𝗲𝗺𝗼𝘁𝗲 𝗮𝗿𝗲𝗮. A moment where 𝗰𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗿 𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗺𝘂𝗻𝗶𝗰𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗯𝗲𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲𝘀 𝗰𝗿𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗰𝗮𝗹.

In these moments, panic takes over. You are in an unfamiliar place trying to explain your exact location. You may not speak Portuguese. They may not speak your language. Even English can fail under pressure.

𝗪𝗶𝘁𝗵 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗦𝗢𝗦 𝗮𝗽𝗽, 𝗮 𝘀𝗶𝗺𝗽𝗹𝗲 𝗱𝗼𝘂𝗯𝗹𝗲 𝘁𝗮𝗽 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗻𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗶𝗻𝘀𝘁𝗮𝗻𝘁𝗹𝘆. Our 24/7 team receives your live GPS location and key details, including medical information, pet care needs if you are hospitalised, and your caravan and insurance details, all stored securely in your file.

We then take over the stressful part, speaking directly with Portuguese emergency services (112) or roadside assistance and staying with you through translation, advice, and updates until help arrives.

So before your next trip, don’t go without support.

Our team is right there with you across Portugal 🇵🇹, speaking Portuguese, English, French, Dutch, German, and Spanish.

In emergencies, the challenge is often not just speed but clarity.

𝗟𝗮𝗻𝗴𝘂𝗮𝗴𝗲 𝗯𝗮𝗿𝗿𝗶𝗲𝗿𝘀, 𝘀𝘁𝗿𝗲𝘀𝘀, 𝗺𝗶𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝗻𝗳𝗼𝗿𝗺𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗼𝗿 𝘂𝗻𝗰𝗲𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗶𝗻𝘁𝘆 𝗮𝗯𝗼𝘂𝘁 𝘄𝗵𝗮𝘁 𝘁𝗼 𝗱𝗼 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗰𝗮𝗻 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻. Our role at iMergencies is to remove that pressure by ensuring the right help is triggered immediately, with clear communication and full context from the start.

Complementing our dedicated emergency line, we offer a 𝗦𝗢𝗦 𝗮𝗽𝗽 included in all packages, as well as an optional 𝗮𝗹𝗮𝗿𝗺 𝗯𝘂𝘁𝘁𝗼𝗻. Both tools connect you directly to our 24/7 emergency team. With a single press, we immediately receive your live location, identity, and relevant medical information, and we can speak to you straight away in your language.

From there, we coordinate the response, whether that means contacting emergency services (112), a key holder, neighbour or carer, depending on what is needed.

Our emergency line is available 24/7 in 🇵🇹 Portuguese, 🇬🇧 English, 🇫🇷 French, 🇩🇪 German, 🇳🇱 Dutch and 🇪🇸 Spanish, covering mainland Portugal, Madeira and the Azores.
