The Ambassador of Malta, HE Rosette Spiteri Cachia, joined the commemorations of Dia de Portugal, de Camões e das Comunidades Portuguesas on the island of Terceira in the Azores, a celebration rich in heritage and national pride.

On the eve of the National Day, the Ambassador attended a reception hosted by the President of the Portuguese Republic HE António José Seguro, where members of the diplomatic corps gathered alongside senior national and regional authorities. The evening unfolded with a commemorative concert that captured the spirit and cultural depth of the occasion.

Ambassador Spiteri Cachia also participated in the ceremonial military parade in Terceira, reflecting the solemnity and grandeur of the celebrations.

Today marks the 107th anniversary of Sette Giugno, a defining moment in Maltese history and a national day of remembrance.

On 7 June 1919, the Maltese people rose in protest against economic hardship following the First World War, including rising bread prices, unemployment, and demands for greater representative government. The unrest led to the tragic loss of life, with four Maltese citizens killed during the events.

Sette Giugno stands as a symbol of resilience, sacrifice, and the Maltese people’s determination to secure justice, better living conditions, and democratic representation. It marked a key step in the constitutional development of the islands, leading to the Amery-Milner Constitution of 1921, which introduced internal self-government and a bicameral parliament, and ultimately paving the way to Malta’s independence in 1964.
