“This archipelago manages the largest search and rescue area in Europe – and the second largest in the North Atlantic….

The authorities who watch over it - MRCC Ponta Delgada, the Portuguese Navy, the Maritime Police, fisheries inspectors, civil protection services – do not sit at the periphery of European maritime affairs. They sit at its frontier…

The Azores are Europe in the Atlantic.”

Our Executive Director Maja Markovčić Kostelac opening the Annual European Coast Guard Event in Ponta Delgada, Azores, today.

The event gathers members of the European Coast Guard community for two days of exchange and discussion on key topics.

It marks the end of EMSA's 12-month chairing of the Tripartite Working Arrangement, the mechanism for cooperation on coast guard issues shared by EMSA, Frontex, the European Border and Coast Guard AgencyFrontex and European Fisheries Control Agency - EFCA

The maritime industry is navigating a decisive turn towards decarbonisation, and hydrogen is one of the most discussed fuel alternatives on the horizon. But is it ready to power the ships of tomorrow?
The latest Tide Talks webinar features expert discussion on what it really takes to make hydrogen work as a marine fuel: from current rules to its environmental promise, to the safety risks that must be managed. The discussion draws directly on the findings of EMSA’s studies into hydrogen as a marine fuel.
This webinar is aimed at maritime professionals, regulators, industry, and anyone working (or studying) at the intersection of shipping and sustainability. Whether you are a seasoned expert or exploring the topic for the first time, this session will give you a solid, evidence-based overview of where hydrogen stands today as a marine fuel, and what it will take to scale it up safely and responsibly.
The webinar takes place from 10:00-11:15 (Lisbon time) on 29 June and can be accessed here: https://tinyurl.com/3pf4aa4t

On 3 June, EMSA, Cefic and Cedre jointly held the 6th evaluation meeting of the MAR-ICE Network for chemical emergencies at sea at EMSA’s headquarters in Lisbon.
Established in 2008, the MAR-ICE service provides EU Member States with expert information, advice and support in maritime chemical incidents and emergencies occurring in European waters.
On 4 June, EMSA also hosted Cefic and representatives from the chemical industry and chemical associations in Europe for the annual meeting of the ICE Network (Intervention in Chemical Transport Emergencies).
The ICE scheme is a collaborative initiative established by the European chemical industry to strengthen cooperation and provide effective assistance during chemical transport incidents, also supporting the MAR-ICE Network during maritime incidents.

The equipment will be used to tackle oil pollution in the Black Sea area, caused by the ongoing war of aggression against Ukraine.

The donation was made through the Black and Caspian Sea II project funded by the Directorate-General for EU Enlargement & Eastern Neighbourhoodand implemented by EMSA.
