The killing of Omar Mohammad Na’ssan and Khalil Abu Alia is part of a wider system of settler terror, apartheid and forced displacement across the occupied West Bank. Settler terror must stop. We want Palestinian children in Gaza safe and back in real classrooms. We want Palestinian children in the occupied West Bank able to travel to school without soldiers, settler terror or military checkpoints controlling their movement. And we want children in Israel to grow up without the knowledge that another round of endless war is waiting around the corner.

We stood in the Palestinian town of Kafr Manda, Palestinians and Jews, to protest this bloody reality and to say: our government is letting hundreds of people be killed every single year. We will not stop fighting until everyone here can live without fear of being killed in their streets and communities.

Organized crime groups in Palestinian society have become more and more powerful as our extremist government ignores the spiraling violence. An average of one Palestinian citizen is killed every day. Over the weekend, a 30-year-old man, Muhammad Katwan, was shot dead in Jaffa and another man wounded from a gunshot, also in Jaffa, minutes later. This reality is unbearable.

We know that our government could save lives if it wanted to stop the bloodshed — previous governments did. But this extremist government has never sanctified any life, and it depends on violence and bloodshed for its survival. We will change this reality.

The first thing we did when we founded Standing Together was hold a protest — the second thing we did was create training seminars for activists.

Because we know that seminars do two things: they give the people practical tools to change reality and inspire real hope. And that’s what it takes to organize communities and create fundamental change – knowing how to do the work, and believing that the future we seek is actually possible.

In the ten years since then, thousands of people have joined our basic and advanced trainings, and some of them now lead these trainings themselves. In recent weeks, we held our Organizing Tools Seminar and our Advanced Seminar, which give activists practical tools and develop long-term vision and planning. We will continue to fight to change our society, because it’s on us to demand a different future and to build it from the ground up!

Settler terror in the occupied West Bank is sustained by the protection of Israeli forces and the government. On the ground, when soldiers stand by as Israeli settlers attack Palestinians and those standing alongside them, they give that violence room to continue.

In Jannatah, Israeli settlers attacked us while Israeli soldiers watched and let it happen. Their inaction had a clear consequence: protection for the attackers, none for the people being attacked.

We cannot end settler terror while leaving the system that enables it intact. We must demand an end to the occupation that arms, protects and emboldens settlers. For Palestinians to have the freedom and safety they deserve, the occupation must end.

Those tiny, separated Palestinian areas that look so strange on a phone screen are connected to a much bigger political reality. For decades, settlements, bypass roads, checkpoints, military zones and restrictions on Palestinian movement have fragmented the occupied West Bank.

Right now, E1 plan is in the news again. The E1 settlement plan pushes that fragmentation even further. The plan, approved for more than 3,400 settlement housing units, sits in one of the most strategically important areas of the West Bank, connecting East Jerusalem, Ramallah and Bethlehem. The UN has warned that E1 would sever the northern and southern West Bank and seriously damage Palestinian territorial continuity.

The West Bank is not naturally a collection of isolated Palestinian islands surrounded by Israel. This geography is being produced through occupation, settlement expansion and policies designed to consolidate Israeli control over more and more land.

Because the more Palestinian land is fragmented, the harder it becomes to build a viable, independent Palestinian state.

We will continue to fight for a lasting peace that enables an independent Palestinian state to exist alongside Israel as two states in a shared homeland, with confederative institutions.

Both peoples belong here. Both peoples deserve a future here. And lasting peace requires a future where Palestine doesn’t disappear from the map, but exists alongside Israel as a free and independent state.
