[March 31] A High Surf Advisory is in effect across portions of Puerto Rico, with the highest risk along north- and east-facing coasts. High surf can be life-threatening not only for swimmers but also for those near the shoreline, as waves can surge onto land and sweep people off rocks and coastal areas. Residents and visitors are urged to stay away from rocks, jetties, and cliffs, avoid turning their back to the ocean, and keep children away from hazardous areas. Conditions can change rapidly, and sharing this information can help prevent injuries and save lives. | Una Advertencia de Oleaje Alto/Fuerte está en efecto en partes de Puerto Rico, con mayor riesgo en las costas del norte y este. From NWS
Rip Current Statement

* WHAT...High Rip Current Risk, life-threatening rip currents.

* WHERE...North and east-facing beaches of Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands.

* WHEN...Through late tonight.

* IMPACTS...Rip currents can sweep even the best swimmers away from shore into deeper water, where it becomes difficult to return to safety.

There is a high risk of rip currents.

Rip currents are powerful channels of water flowing quickly away from shore, which occur most often at low spots or breaks in the sandbar and in the vicinity of structures such as groins, jetties and piers. Heed the advice of lifeguards, beach patrol flags and signs.

If you become caught in a rip current, yell for help. Remain calm, do not exhaust yourself and stay afloat while waiting for help. If you have to swim out of a rip current, swim parallel to shore and back toward the beach when possible. Do not attempt to swim directly against a rip current as you will tire quickly.
