Hurricane Maria touched land on September 20th with winds of 250kph, flooding entire communities, destroying the agriculture, and leaving its people without electricity, water or communication. The long-term implications of this phenomenon are unknown, as the damages were so big that 2 weeks later, the conditions remain the same – no water, food, gas electricity or communication outside of the cap

ital. The governor of Puerto Rico best described it as “the worse natural phenomenon of the century”. This hurricane has no precedent, so regardless of the government’s efforts to prepare for its landing, the massive destruction extended to hospitals, airports and docks, which made it even harder to serve the citizens post-event. The number of people in shelters increases by the hour, and so does government and private efforts to stabilize the situation. Puerto Ricans in throughout Europe,, and others who love the island, have come together in solidarity for the people back home. Our fundraising efforts will be spread across different initiatives, with the purpose of sending funds that help rebuild Puerto Rico’s infrastructure and support those communities that were left with nothing. Our efforts will be channeled through a non-profit in Madrid called YoSoyElOtro. This non-profit will then distribute the funds to El Proyecto Enlace del Caño Marin Peña, Taller Salud, and Casa Pueblo. These three humanitarian organizations are providing direct relief to the people of Puerto Rico, which means that every donation will land in the hands of those that need it the most. https://www.generosity.com/emergencies-fundraising/reconstruccion-y-apoyo-a-damnificados-en-pr

Taller Salud, Inc. is a community based feminist organization working in the field of women´s health since 1979. We focus our efforts on educational and prevention programs directed at women and girls in the towns of Carolina, Canóvanas, Loíza, Río Grande, Luquillo, Fajardo, and Vieques in the northeast coast of Puerto Rico. Our current programs include HIV/STD prevention, child abuse prevention, sexual aggression prevention, teenage pregnancy and domestic violence prevention, and our Information and Documentation Center.

Our programs work with young women and girls in order to strengthen knowledge and skills related to self esteem, anatomy, sexuality, emotional health, violence prevention strategies, public speaking, and community involvement. Taller Salud also manages a unique community educational resource in our Information Documentation Center. This library is one of the most complete sources in Puerto Rico of current and historical information on women´s rights, reproductive rights, and women´s health. The Center has been available to the general community since 1992, and frequently receives visitors from students and organizations interested in issues affecting women in Puerto Rico.

The Martín Peña Channel is a 3.75 mile long tidal channel located within the San Juan Bay National Estuary in Puerto Rico, the only tropical estuary within the National Estuary Program.
During the early 20th century, substandard dwellings were built in the mangrove wetlands bordering the channel, which used refuse and debris as fill material. The channel is clogged with debris, sediment, and organic waste. Over 3,000 structures still discharge raw sewage into the remains of the channel. The lack of adequate sewer and storm water systems has led to flooding, exposing 27,000 residents to polluted waters and sediments.

The Caño Martín Peña ENLACE Project is the solution proposed by communities organized under G-8, Inc.—in partnership with the private sector and the Government—, to restore the environmental integrity of the channel; protect the health and safety of community residents; and promote an inclusive, democratic city with quality public spaces and opportunities to generate wealth for the community and the island.
Citizen participation is the precept from which comprehensive, innovative solutions are set in motion for complex issues, thus fostering individual and collective action. The communities are protagonists, working tirelessly and joined together by a sense of solidarity and belonging.
