What could be hiding on board? ⚓🔎

Finding signs of cross-border crime at sea takes a trained eye and plenty of practice.

In Setúbal 🇵🇹, Frontex joined Portugal’s and other law-enforcement and customs officers from Belgium, Denmark, Portugal, Spain and Germany for practical training and exchange of expertise.

Through practical exercises, they explored together vessel and container searches, document checks and other techniques that can help detect cross-border crime at sea 🌊

What happens when a migrant crosses the European border irregularly?

They are taken to a transitory place called a Reception and Identification Centre (RIC).

But what is a “RIC”? It is a facility where migrants receive information about their rights, obligations and the next steps, depending on their legal situation.

RICs are managed by the Member States, with many entities involved, from national authorities to European agencies like EU Agency for Asylum - EUAA and international organisations like IOM - UN Migration.

Currently, Frontex is present at six RICs in Greece: Chios, Lesvos, Samos, Kos, Leros, Malakasa. There will be one in Diavata as well as in Cyprus.

Since June alone, more than 6000 non-EU country nationals have been registered with the support of Frontex. Our officers’ mission is clear: to ensure that everybody is treated with respect.

Frontex has a patrol vessel to the English Channel for the first time.

It is supporting French authorities in search and rescue operations, while giving them a fuller look at what is happening at sea. The ship is a Spanish Guardia Civil offshore patrol vessel called the Duque de Ahumada.

"This deployment is about one thing: seeing more so national authorities can do more. Better awareness means faster decisions, stronger coordination and better protection of lives," says Hans Leijtens, Executive Director of Frontex.

Crossing the English Channel is a dangerous endeavour. The boats are often overcrowded and the rapidly changing conditions mean that lives are always at risk. This is why Frontex supports national authorities in monitoring the coastline between France and Belgium and the waters between France and the United Kingdom.

As always, national authorities remain fully responsible for law enforcement and search and rescue in their own waters. Frontex supports them so that they can make faster and better-informed decisions. The ship will not be involved in interception operations in the area.

Yesterday, Bulgaria’s Minister of the Interior, Ivan Demerdzhiev, and Chief Commissioner and Director of the General Directorate of the Border Police Anton Zlatanov met with our Executive Director, Hans Leijtens, to discuss ongoing cooperation and ways to address security challenges and hybrid threats at the EU’s external borders.

Together, we’re strengthening border management, supporting migration management and contributing to a safer Europe 🤝

Fundamental rights are built into our mandate, not added on.

An independent Fundamental Rights Office reporting to the Management Board, monitors assigned to each operation, and a complaints mechanism open to anyone affected: no other border agency has this written into its founding law.

In 2025, the Fundamental Rights Office gave an opinion on the operational plan of every joint operation, issued 12 further opinions to the Executive Director, and assessed 204 allegations of serious incidents, formally opening 47 cases.

🌐Global tour under the hood!

Our border patrol found over €55k hidden right inside a car’s headlight housing!

From Canadian and Australian to American, British and Albanian currency, it seems this driver was trying to fund a global tour. Spoiler: it didn’t work.

Thanks to the excellent cooperation between the Montenegrin authorities and Frontex, the suspect has been apprehended and handed over to the prosecutor.

17 countries ➕ two weeks of coordinated checks 🟰112 arrests .

Joint Action Days Danube 11 ran along the route from the Western Balkans into central Europe for two weeks in June.

Frontex coordinated it with Austria’s BMI - Bundesministerium für Inneres neres, supported by Europol pol and INTERPOL HQ. Officers in 17 countries ran checks at the same time and reported what they found each day to a joint centre in Vienna, where liaison officers compared cases and passed leads back while the operation was still running.

Alongside the 112 arrests on suspicion of migrant smuggling, officers recorded 60 cases of document fraud and recovered 59 stolen vehicles.
