The Festival Alphabet – or 𝗖𝗵𝗼𝗽𝗶𝗻 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗛𝗶𝘀 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝟮𝟬𝟮𝟲
𝗠 – 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗣𝗼𝗹𝗶𝘀𝗵 𝗠𝘂𝘀𝗶𝗰

🔴 Polish music has been at the heart of the ‘Chopin and his Europe’ Festival since its very first edition. Chopin, of course; yet special attention is also dedicated to the works of other Polish composers – those popular in Poland and abroad, and those less well-known, and sometimes even forgotten. For it is this music – that composed before Fryderyk was born, that created by his contemporaries, and that by those for whom Chopin was an inspiration – that creates an important, interesting, sometimes non-obvious – and all the more fascinating – context for Chopin’s own work. And we are particularly committed to promoting and presenting it in the most outstanding interpretations possible.

🔴 It has therefore become a tradition, that ensembles performing at the Festival include works by Polish composers in their programmes – even if, as circumstances dictate, this is ‘only’ to a limited extent. For in this context (!), that ‘only’ actually becomes ‘as much as’. And so, this year we have heard and will yet hear: Penderecki performed by the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal, Bacewicz performed by the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra, Szymanowski performed by the Pittsburgh Symphony, and Dobrzyński performed by the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice.

🔴 There is, however, much more Polish music on offer: Bomsori Kim performs works by Karłowicz with the National Philharmonic Orchestra, Tomasz Ritter performs Feliks Janiewicz with {oh!} Orchestra, and Chouchane Siranossian and Martín García García perform works by Karol Mikuli – a pupil of Chopin.

As for Chopin himself – featured in seven of the festival’s 16 concerts – let everyone seek him out (and choose!) as they please.

The Festival Alphabet – or Chopin and His Europe 2026
L as in laureates 🏅

The Chopin Competition is a natural point of reference for the Chopin and His Europe Festival – especially in the ‘post-competition’ year and on the eve of the Competition’s 100th anniversary (coming up in 2027!).

And this year, we have invited:

🥇 Two winners: Eric Lu and Bruce Liu;
🏅 Six prize-winners: Kevin Chen, Zitong Wang, Tianyao Lyu, Vincent Ong, Lukas Geniušas, Martín García García;

To play:
🎶 Two recitals, two chamber concerts;
🎻 with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra conducted by Manfred Honeck, the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal conducted by Rafael Payare, and the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice conducted by Christian Arming.

It’s worth checking the website and social media, as tickets for some concerts are still available! 😊

The 22nd Chopin and His Europe Festival is held in Warsaw from 23 August to 6 September 2026.

🎼 We spent Thursday evening enjoying the music of Fryderyk Chopin and Auguste Frachomme. Their works were performed at the Polish Radio Concert Studio by Roel Dieltiens (cello) and Frank Braley (period piano), evoking the atmosphere of two friends’ intimate meeting.

The 22nd Chopin and His Europe Festival is held in Warsaw from 23 August to 6 September 2026.

The Festival Alphabet – or Chopin and His Europe 2026
K as in concerts (phonetically 😉) 🎶

🟢 Concerts – not to be confused with concert evenings – are one of the key elements of the Festival. At this year’s festival, we’ll hear 10 concerts, all performed by outstanding soloists and excellent orchestras. We’re not big on statistics, but they look exceptionally interesting!

🟢 Exactly half are works by Polish composers. Firstly, there is Chopin, performed by the prize-winners of the latest Chopin Competition – the Concerto in F minor (twice: Kevin Chen with the Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and Rafael Payare, and Tianyao Lyu with the Polish National Radio Symphony Orchestra in Katowice and Christian Arming) and the Concerto in E minor (Eric Lu – also with the Montréal ensemble). In addition, Karłowicz’s Violin Concerto in A major will be performed by Bomsori Kim with the Warsaw Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Riccardo Minasi, and one of Feliks Janiewicz’s violin concertos will be presented in a piano arrangement by Sebastian Gottschick, performed by Tomasz Ritter and Martyna Pastuszka’s {oh!} Orchestra. This is already the second concerto by this composer that we are presenting in this form – Janiewicz is very well known to the festival audience, as we have been consistently showcasing his oeuvre for several years now (all violin concertos have already been performed at the festival; the Institute has released three of the five, with the remaining two coming soon).

🟢 Beethoven x3 – in anticipation of next year’s grand anniversary: Vikingur Olafsson will perform the Concerto No. 5 with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra under the baton of Santtu-Matias Rouvale, whilst the Piano Concertos Nos. 4 and 5 – in period instrumentation – will be performed by Tomasz Ritter, winner of the 1st Chopin Competition on Period Instruments, and the {oh!} Orchestra; Xavier de Maistre also returns to the Festival, playing François-Adrien Boieldieu’s Harp Concerto with the {oh!} Orchestra as well. And finally, there is Brahms’s Piano Concerto in D minor, performed by Alexander Kantorow and the Pittsburgh Symphony under Manfred Honeck.

🟢 And let’s tentatively add something that isn’t strictly a concerto, but could in fact be one – albeit in the rare form of a set of variations. We are, of course, referring to Rachmaninoff’s Rhapsody on a Theme of Paganini. It will be performed by Bruce Liu with the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra!
