3 August 1941 | Stanisław Sedlaczek, a Polish educator and prominent scouting leader, perished in the German Auschwitz camp.

He was born on 31 January 1892 in Kołomyja. He held the rank of Scoutmaster of the Republic of Poland, the highest Polish scouting rank, awarded to only eight people. He served as Chief Scout of the Polish Scouting and Guiding Association in 1919–1921 and 1925–1931.

During the German occupation, he co-founded the underground Polish Scouting organisation (known as Hufce Polskie) and became its leader. He also worked with the Warsaw Committee for Social Self-Help, assisting displaced people.

Sedlaczek was arrested by the Gestapo on the night of 17–18 May 1941 and imprisoned at Pawiak Prison in Warsaw. On 23 July, he was deported to Auschwitz, where he was registered as prisoner number 18604.

Less than two weeks later, on 3 August 1941, he died after being beaten by an SS man while unloading sacks of cement. He was 49 years old.
