A Five-Day Basic Biorisk Management (BRM) Training for Provincial TB Reference Laboratory staff of the TB Control Program was conducted by the Association for Biorisk Management (ABM) at the Tourmaline Hotel, Peshawar. The training aimed to strengthen participants’ knowledge and practical capacity in identifying, assessing, and managing biological risks associated with TB laboratory work, with particular emphasis on biosafety, biosecurity, safe handling and transportation of infectious specimens, appropriate use of PPE, and preparedness for laboratory incidents, accidents, spills, and occupational exposure.
The training is expected to enhance the capacity of laboratory staff to apply effective Biorisk management practices in their routine activities, reduce the risk of laboratory-acquired infections and occupational exposure, improve compliance with laboratory safety procedures, and strengthen preparedness and response to laboratory emergencies. Overall, the training will contribute to creating a safer laboratory working environment and strengthening the quality, safety, and effectiveness of TB laboratory services under the TB Control Program.

A Provincial Strategic Plan (PSP) meeting was held at the Provincial TB Control Program Office, Peshawar, to initiate planning for the next strategic cycle (2027–2029). The meeting was chaired by Dr. Mudassar Shahzad, Project Director TB Control Program Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

Representatives from development partners and the National TB Control Program actively participated in the discussion. Their valuable insights and recommendations will contribute significantly to strengthening TB prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and control efforts across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa.

The Provincial TB Control Program remains committed to collaborative planning and evidence-based strategies to achieve a TB-free future.

World TB Day 2026 was observed at Provincial TB Control Program Hayatabad Medical Complex with an awareness walk organized by the Provincial TB Control Program in collaboration with partner organizations including the Association for Community Development, Greenstar Social Marketing and representatives from NHSP World Bank.

Health professionals staff and community members participated in the event to highlight the ongoing threat of tuberculosis in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and the need for collective action.

The event commenced with the recitation of verses from the Holy Quran. Dr. Muddasser Shahzad Project Director TB Control Program Khyber Pakhtunkhwa emphasized the importance of saving lives and called on all participants to act as ambassadors for TB awareness. He stressed that tuberculosis remains a significant public health challenge requiring coordinated efforts. Dr. Akmal Naveed Director of the Association for Community Development, highlighted key field interventions such as contact screening outreach visits, and chest camps and emphasized the role of social media in expanding awareness. The event concluded with a renewed commitment from all participants to strengthen efforts toward a TB-free future.

We are pleased to welcome Dr. Ayesha Safdar to the TB Control Program as the newly appointed Incharge, Provincial TB Reference Laboratory.
A special welcome event was organized by the Project Director TB Control Program, Dr. Muddassar Shahzad, who warmly welcome Dr. Ayesha and expressed confidence that her expertise and leadership will add great value to the program’s mission.
