LUMS - Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities & Social Sciences Official page of the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School of Humanities and Social Sciences, LUMS

Welcome to the Mushtaq Ahmad Gurmani School for Humanities and Social Sciences at LUMS. We are the largest school at LUMS and pride ourselves on our world class faculty and thriving student life. In an age where ‘marketability’ has become a buzzword, driving many young men and women into the professions right after high school, we focus on providing our students with a broad-based education that l

ays a solid foundation for them to build their lives and careers on. Trained at leading universities of the world, and deeply engaged with local realities, our faculty members have transformed the way social sciences and humanities are taught in Pakistan. Their passion and commitment is reflected in the vibrant intellectual culture of the school, and translates into teaching that is truly transformative. Students start the programme by developing strong conceptual foundations across a range of subjects before graduating on to advanced, specialized courses that only our faculty can deliver. Equipped with an excellent liberal arts education, with specializations in economics, political science, sociology, anthropology, history, and literature in English, along with several joint majors, our students go on to stellar careers in academia, policy-making, politics, media, corporate sector, third sector, government and international organizations. However, as proud as we are of our students’ accomplishments, what gives us even greater satisfaction is the sensitivity, empathy and thoughtfulness that we are able to impart to them. Arriving just after high school, our students step into the world four years later as mature, engaged and reflective citizens, prepared to serve in the highest offices in public and private sectors.

Dr. Nasir Abbas Nayyar, Head of Publications at GCLL was recently interviewed for the Critical Humanities Journal (published by Marshall University), reflecting on his decades-long contribution to Urdu literary criticism and theory.

In the conversation, Dr. Nayyar discusses how some of his most foundational work emerged by examining the ways Western critical thought shaped modern Urdu literature, tracing shifts in literary form, national narration, and the tension between classical and colonial influence. He also reflects on writing across genres — criticism, fiction, and journalism — describing his own literary identity as something that takes shape not in the act of writing itself, but in how that writing is later read and interpreted.

Wonderful news from MGSHSS! 🎉

We are proud to share that Dr. Ilyas Chattha, Associate Professor of History at MGSHSS, LUMS, has been co-awarded the 2026 American Institute of Pakistan Studies (AIPS) Book Prize for his book Citizens to Traitors: Bengali Internment in Pakistan, 1971–1974 (Cambridge University Press).

The AIPS Book Prize Committee described the work as a path-breaking contribution that recovers the silenced history of Bengalis in West Pakistan who were transformed by the 1971 Bangladesh War from rights-bearing citizens to ethnically marked others, subjected to indefinite internment and, ultimately, erasure. Drawing on period journalism, official and personal correspondence, oral histories, and visits to former internment facilities, the book reconstructs the suppressed narratives of Bengali officials, students, and workers who lost everything during the 1971–74 war and its aftermath.

The American Institute of Pakistan Studies, established in 1973, is a bi-national research and education organisation dedicated to promoting academic study of Pakistan in the US and encouraging scholarly exchange between the two countries.

Congratulations, Dr. Ilyas Chattha — a thoroughly well-deserved recognition. 📚

Meet Rida Qadri, Political Science, Class of 2013.

Rida is a Senior Research Scientist at Google, working at the intersection of AI and culture with a focus on the non-Western world.

Her research reimagines how AI can engage with cultural experiences — from storytelling and heritage to media generation — and develops evaluation methodologies that capture the social and cultural impact of AI beyond conventional benchmarks. She has published in leading venues across the social sciences and computer science, contributed op-eds to Wired, The Guardian, Slate, and Vice, and sits on the editorial board of the Cambridge Forum on AI: Culture and Society. She holds a PhD in Computational Urban Science and a Master's in Urban Studies from MIT.

On her time at MGSHSS, Rida reflects: "The SHSS curriculum and faculty at LUMS taught me new frameworks for looking at and understanding the world. The critical thinking skills and the rigorous theoretical engagement with both western and non-western scholarship that I was introduced to in my classes continue to shape the questions I ask in my research and have helped make me a better researcher."

Congratulations on a remarkable journey, Rida — we look forward to seeing what comes next.

We are proud to share that Dr. Ilyas Chattha, Associate Professor of History at MGSHSS, LUMS, has been delivering a series of book talks on his latest publication, Citizens to Traitors: Bengali Internment in Pakistan, 1971–1974, at some of the world's leading universities. 📚

Published by Cambridge University Press, the book draws on a wide range of previously untapped sources to reconstruct a largely forgotten chapter of South Asian history. In the aftermath of the Bangladesh War, Bengali co-religionists were recast from citizens to hostages, held as leverage for the return of Pakistani prisoners of war in what became one of the largest cases of mutual mass internment since 1945.

Dr. Chattha has presented this work at the London School of Economics, King's College London, Stanford University, UC Santa Barbara, and SOAS University of London, and participated in a book panel at the Law and Society Association Conference in San Francisco.

Congratulations to Dr. Ilyas Chattha on taking this important scholarship to leading platforms around the world.

Congratulations to Muhammad Subhan (BSc Economics, Class of 2025), MGSHSS, who is pursuing an MS in Finance at UT Dallas and has been awarded a $10,000 scholarship!

At LUMS, Muhammad's interest in finance was shaped by Professor Sheraz Latif's Principles of Finance course, which he credits as transformative in setting his professional direction. He also gained practical exposure through a real estate project with Professor Muhammad Saad Imtiaz, which deepened his understanding of the intersection between finance and real estate.

In his own words: "MGSHSS shaped me into someone who is analytically driven, professionally ambitious, and I am deeply grateful for the mentorship I received there."

Congratulations, Subhan— wishing you the very best ahead! 💥

It is with great pleasure that MGSHSS announces the promotion to Professor of Dr. Ali Cheema.

A Rhodes Scholar and Cambridge-trained economist, Dr. Cheema has been a defining presence at LUMS since 1999. His scholarship — spanning governance, political economy, women's participation, and local public finance — has been published in some of the world's leading academic journals, including the Journal of Political Economy, the American Political Science Review, Science, and Nature Medicine, and has received international recognition including the American Political Science Association's Luebbert Best Article Honourable Mention award.

His contributions extend well beyond research. As Chair of the Economics Department, he played a pivotal role in building it into one of Pakistan's leading centres for economics education. He co-founded the Centre for Economic Research in Pakistan (CERP) and the Institute of Development and Economic Alternatives (IDEAS) — both of which have meaningfully strengthened Pakistan's research ecosystem and evidence-based policymaking. As Director of the Mahbub ul Haq Research Centre (2019–24), he launched the internationally recognised Pathways to Development conference and championed interdisciplinary collaboration. He has served on the Board of the State Bank of Pakistan, the National Finance Commission, and the Punjab Provincial Finance Commission, and is an Affiliated Professor at J-PAL MIT. He currently serves as Vice Chancellor of LUMS, a role he has held since January 2024.

This promotion recognises a career defined by intellectual distinction, institutional leadership, public service, and a lasting impact on scholarship, policy, and the many students and mentees he has shaped along the way.

Please join us in warmly congratulating Dr. Ali Cheema on this well-deserved recognition.
