Switzerland is quietly becoming one of Europe’s key data hubs. And most people have no idea how much infrastructure is already behind the digital services we use every day.
More than 120 data centers are already operating across the country, with new facilities under construction. Companies are drawn by a combination of political stability, reliable electricity, strong data protection and fast connectivity.
At the same time, the AI boom is accelerating demand for computing power.
Zurich alone now hosts more than 30 data centers and is increasingly positioning itself as a hub for AI-related activities. Behind every cloud service, AI model, video call or search query, there is physical infrastructure running 24/7. But there’s another side to this story.
Data centers consume huge amounts of electricity and water to keep servers running and cool. As the sector expands, pressure on energy systems is growing worldwide.
In Switzerland, some operators are already experimenting with ways to reduce that impact:
♻️ Closed cooling systems
🏙️ Waste heat reused to heat buildings
☀️ Solar panels installed on rooftops
And at the Swiss National Supercomputing Centre in Lugano, the “Alps” supercomputer uses water from Lake Lugano for cooling while supporting climate modelling, weather forecasting and advanced AI applications.
The future of AI is not only about algorithms.
It’s also about energy, infrastructure and places to store and process data.
Would you trust your data to a country like Switzerland? 👀
