Pakistan Democracy Watch

Pakistan Democracy Watch Let's stand up and be counted, no saviour would come to rescue! After all, it draws it legitimacy in the name of people, so it must deliver public good.

We are a non-partisan and non-profit group of the ordinary citizens of Pakistan who believe that democratic polity can evolve and sustain only if a significant part of society gets involved in civil society activism. We believe, there is no alternative to democratic polity; however, democracy must be responsive and accountable to the people of Pakistan. Notwithstanding rehtoric, democracy has cont

ributed little for general welfare except extending patronage for partisan political interest. Political gimmicks like Benazir Income Support Program, Sasti Rooti, Yellow Taxi and Free Laptops has hardly served the purpose of socio-economic development. Corruption, abuse of authority lack of accountability remains the order of the day. We do support free media, but we feel strongly about distractions and distortions caused by sensational, inapt and unbalanced reporting. Being citizens of Pakistan, we feel that criticising/ blaming the ruling elite or keep waiting for some Messiah won’t bring about any improvement. We have to but stand up and be counted. We can do certain small and ordinary things; done together they can create an extraordinary impact. Let us pool our efforts at this space to hold our rulers and media accountable.

According to a report, rich Pakistanis have been using Iqamas (work permits) as a tool to stash money in tax heavens and “ironically, incumbent federal ministers of ruling Pakistan Muslim League-N (PML-N) including Finance Minister Ishaq Dar, Foreign Minister Khawaja Asif and Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal are holding Iqamas/work permits of various countries like UAE, Saudi Arabia etc”.

The military conspiracy argument ignores the elephant in the room — the presence of unexplained and undeclared assets whose ownership the ruling family accepted in court. While the military is likely to have watched this episode unfold gleefully, the Sharifs have been caught out by their massive unexplained aggrandisement of assets coinciding with their long stint in public office. As for the technicality, one wonders if we would bemoan Al Capone’s conviction because he was nabbed on tax evasion and not for his real crimes — murder, extortion, racketeering etc.

It’s a sad reflection on us when we lionise corrupt leaders.

Despite the ousting of Nawaz Sharif, colossal corruption survives intact in Pakistan, argues the author and political activist Tariq Ali

Frankly I have no reason to rely more on her legal opinion than that of the 5 honorable judge, since there is nothing to question integrity of the bench. She is too partisan & too political to stay judicious.

If civilian supremacy is ever to be established, the civilians will need to gain in credibility with the public. A genuine accountability machine that steps up the fight against corruption could be a good starting point.

The government is already charging at least four special surcharges of about Rs4.7 per unit in consumer tariff to cover low recoveries, high losses, special debt servicing, tariff equalisation across various distribution companies and so on.

Still, Pakistan has so often been a miasma of uncertainty, impunity, coercion and violence that it is worth applauding the Supreme Court’s determination to see this case to a difficult but necessary conclusion. It’s a glimmer of hope for accountability and rule of law in a nation that could use much more of it.

The Supreme Court removes Nawaz Sharif for corruption.

So this hue and cry over the fall from grace of Sharif and describing the events as a setback to democracy is beyond comprehension. The case against Sharif went through a whole legal process and cannot be described as part of a conspiracy or a judicial coup.

The judgement is a serious blow to dynastic politics but one is not sure if it is the end.
