MoU Signed Between AMBILE and Sindhi Language Authority to Strengthen Sindhi Language Technologies
On 22 January 2026, an important Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was formally signed in Hyderabad between the Abdul Majid Bhurgri Institute of Language Engineering (AMBILE) and the Sindhi Language Authority (SLA), marking a significant step forward in institutional collaboration for the advancement of the Sindhi language in the digital era. The MoU was signed by Amar Fayaz Buriro, Director AMBILE, and Prof. Dr. Sher Mehrani, Chairman Sindhi Language Authority. Both institutions operate under the administrative control of the Culture, Tourism, Antiquities & Archives Department, Government of Sindh, and share a common mandate of preserving, promoting, and modernizing the Sindhi language.
The MoU establishes a formal framework for close cooperation between the two premier language institutions, with a special focus on advanced linguistic and technological initiatives such as Sindhi Speech Technology, the Sindhi WordNet System, and other digital language development projects. By bringing together SLA’s long-standing expertise in grammar, lexicography, and linguistics with AMBILE’s specialization in language engineering and artificial intelligence, the agreement aims to accelerate the creation of high-quality, globally competitive Sindhi language resources.
Under the terms of the MoU, five employees of the Sindhi Language Authority will be deputed to work at AMBILE under its technical supervision. These professionals will contribute directly to critical tasks including data sorting, linguistic annotation, word tokenization, and other core processes related to speech technologies and the Sindhi WordNet System. AMBILE will provide comprehensive technical training to the nominated staff to ensure effective participation in these projects, while the deputed employees will continue to draw their salaries and service benefits from SLA, maintaining administrative continuity and institutional balance.
The agreement also underscores the importance of acknowledgment and intellectual recognition. AMBILE will formally acknowledge SLA’s partnership and contributions in all relevant reports, publications, and public dissemination related to joint projects, particularly the Sindhi WordNet System. The individual contributions of the deputed SLA professionals will be credited by name, reflecting a transparent and merit-based approach to collaborative research and development. Both institutions have further agreed to highlight each other’s role as official partners on their respective websites and digital platforms, reinforcing a spirit of shared ownership and cooperation.
Beyond the immediate scope of the Sindhi WordNet and speech technology initiatives, the MoU lays the foundation for broader institutional collaboration. AMBILE may, as needed, utilize the services and expertise of the deputed SLA professionals in other ongoing or future Sindhi language projects, with appropriate training ensured in each case. At the same time, SLA will continue to provide linguistic, grammatical, and lexical support to AMBILE, while AMBILE will extend its technical and digital expertise to SLA for projects involving digitization and modern language technologies. In this way, both institutions commit to acting as long-term knowledge partners for initiatives aligned with the preservation, promotion, and modernization of the Sindhi language.
The MoU will remain valid for an initial period of three years from the date of signing and may be extended through mutual written consent of both parties. While the agreement does not create binding legal obligations beyond its stated terms, it provides a strong institutional and strategic framework for sustained collaboration.
This MoU is widely seen as a landmark development for Sindhi language planning and digital humanities in Sindh. It reflects a shared vision to safeguard Sindhi’s rich linguistic heritage while ensuring its active presence in contemporary and future technological ecosystems, including artificial intelligence–driven language platforms. Through this partnership, AMBILE and the Sindhi Language Authority reaffirm their collective commitment to taking the Sindhi language confidently into the digital future.
