The Economic Transformation Initiative - Gilgit-Baltistan (ETI-GB) 🌱 is a US $133.72 million 💰 development program of the Government of Gilgit-Balt

istan 🇵🇰 funded by IFAD 🌍, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation 🤝 through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation (AICS) 🇮🇹 and the Government of Gilgit-Baltistan 🏔️. 📈 The development objective of the program is to increase agricultural incomes 🚜 and food security 🍽️ for at least 100,000 rural households 🏡 in Gilgit-Baltistan, as part of the overall goal to improve income 💵 and reduce poverty 🙏 and malnutrition 🥦 in the rural areas of Gilgit-Baltistan. The programme initially focused on four core districts (Gizer, Ghanche, Astore, and Dimaer) for economic infrastructure and all the districts for two value chains (potato and apricot) and small pilots in dairy and potato seed. At mid-term, the scope of the programme was opened to additional value chains. For the three-year extension period (2022–25), the Economic Infrastructure Component was extended to all 10 districts of Gilgit Baltistan by including the leftover six districts (Gilgit, Hunza, Nagar, Skardu, Shigar, and Kharmang). The program is now under ex*****on in the entire 10 districts of Gilgit-Baltistan region of Pakistan.

The 11.27 km Gulshan-e-Kabir Farm-to-Market Road (FMR) in Ghanche, Baltistan currently under construction, is transforming previously abandoned and uncultivated land. Thanks to improved road connectivity, the local community has resumed agricultural activities—cultivating barley, peas, and beans—marking a major revival of local livelihoods and productive land use.

Supported by the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD), ETI-GB is constructing this road to benefit 359 households and 242 acres of land, with a project cost of 90.73 million rupees. The scheme is steadily progressing towards completion.

Transforming Agriculture in Kuru, Ghanche, Baltistan 🛣️✨

The ongoing 13.17 km Farm-to-Market Road in Kuru, Ghanche, is a game-changer for the region. Executed under the ETI-GB program with the generous support of the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation through the Italian Agency for Development Cooperation(AICS), this vital road network is connecting 526 acres of previously disconnected farmlands. To make this major investment a reality, 924 local households stepped up, sacrificing millions of rupees worth of agricultural land by providing a free Right of Way (RoW). This is a shining example of a true public-community partnership driving sustainable economic infrastructure development in Gilgit-Baltistan. 🇵🇰🤝🇮🇹

In April 2026, the Chikas Farmers Cooperative Society Pvt. Ltd, Danyore, Gilgit, a progressive Village Agriculture Cooperative (VAC) established under the ETI-GB program, signed an agreement 🤝 with the Zari Baramdat Company. The objective of this partnership is to establish a direct supply chain for cherries, moving them from the cooperative directly to major retail platforms across Pakistan, including Foodpanda and Imtiaz Super Stores. By eliminating middlemen, this agreement ensures that affiliated farmers receive better rates while guaranteeing a consistent supply of high-quality produce for large grocery chains. Consequently, the exquisite cherries of Gilgit-Baltistan will now be easily available in Pakistan's major cities. Refrigerated transport is essential for Gilgit-Baltistan’s cherries to bridge the long and hot journey to urban markets without spoilage.

Yesterday, the Chikas Farmers Co-operative Society Danyour, in collaboration with Zari Baramdat Company, successfully dispatched its first-ever consignment of fresh cherries in a temperature-controlled container from Gilgit to Lahore. This premium shipment is destined for Foodpanda and Imtiaz Super Store, marking a significant milestone in the cooperative’s journey toward sustainable agribusiness. By utilizing 🚛 refrigerated vehicles to transport fresh fruit to downcountry markets, the cooperative has realized a key target envisioned in the ETI-GB program design i-e, achieving self-sufficiency in agriculture and business.

ETI-GB has provided financial, technical, and institutional support to 162 VACs supporting 40,613 farmers, enabling their transition into viable, sustainable agribusiness enterprises. The program offers a clear roadmap for each VAC to move beyond subsistence farming toward commercial production, aggregation, and marketing. ETI-GB extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Chikas Farmers Cooperative Society, Danyore, Gilgit for achieving this major milestone.
