JTF POSEIDON, MARITIME AGENCIES DEMONSTRATE COHERENCE IN WESTERN MINDANAO MARITIME SECURITY OPERATIONS
NAVAL STATION ROMULO ESPALDON, ZAMBOANGA CITY β Joint Task Force (JTF) Poseidon and key maritime security and law enforcement agencies in Western Mindanao demonstrated coherence, interoperability, and unity of effort during a Joint Maritime Patrol (MARPAT) and Visit, Board, Search, and Seizure (VBSS) capability demonstration held in connection with the Western Mindanao Commandβs (WESTMINCOM) 20th Founding Anniversary.
The activity showcased how JTF Poseidon and partner agencies operate as a coherent maritime security force, integrating surveillance, interdiction, boarding, law enforcement, and regulatory functions into a coordinated response to maritime security threats and transnational crimes.
In a simulated maritime interdiction scenario, a Philippine Air Force ScanEagle Unmanned Aerial System provided real-time surveillance of a non-compliant Vessel of Interest. Philippine Navy vessel BRP Herminigildo Yurong (PG204) and Philippine Coast Guard vessel BRP Tubbataha (MRRV-4401) subsequently established the maritime perimeter and intercepted the vessel, followed by a VBSS operation conducted by the PCG Special Operations Group.
The operation transitioned to an Inter-Agency Maritime Law Enforcement Team composed of representatives from the PNP Regional Maritime Unit-9, Bureau of Customs, Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources, Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency, PNP Maritime Group, Bureau of Immigration, and Bureau of Quarantine, which performed their respective enforcement, regulatory, documentation, and legal functions.
The seamless progression from detection and interdiction to boarding, inspection, and disposition demonstrated the value of established inter-agency mechanisms and a shared operational understanding among maritime stakeholders in Western Mindanao.
RADM CONSTANCIO ARTURO M REYES JR PN, Commander, Naval Command Western Mindanao, emphasized that maritime security is strengthened by the ability of agencies to act collectively and decisively.
βMaritime security is a shared responsibility. What we demonstrated today is our ability to bring together different capabilities and mandates into one coherent effort to protect our waters and our people,β RADM REYES said.
The activity reinforced JTF Poseidon as a key mechanism for synchronizing maritime security efforts in Western Mindanao, strengthening the collective capability of military, maritime law enforcement, and regulatory agencies to address smuggling, trafficking, illegal fishing, and other threats across the regionβs maritime domain.
