Would you pay a $345 library fine? 🫣📖

That’s exactly what Emily Canellos-Simms did when she returned a copy of Days and Deeds to the Kewanee Public Library. The catch? It was 47 years late!

It was borrowed in April 1955 and finally made its way home decades later, securing a spot in the Guinness World Records.

Did you know?
there is a building where you can read a book in Canada while your feet are resting in the United States?

The Haskell Free Library and Opera House sits directly on the US–Canada border, splitting the building between Derby Line, Vermont, and Stanstead, Quebec.

The Border Line: A black line runs straight through the floor. In the opera house upstairs, the audience sits in the US, but the stage is in Canada!

The Loophole: The library's only entrance is on the US side, but Canadians are legally allowed to cross the border to visit without passing customs, as long as they return to Canada immediately afterward.

Double Duty: Because it belongs to both countries, the building operates with two separate water systems, two sets of emergency regulations, and accepts both US and Canadian currencies.
