Barangay Camino Nuevo has a history deeply rooted in transformation and community initiative. Prior to its establishment, the area that would later become Camino Nuevo was part of Barangay Canelar, characterized by reclaimed rice fields and a prevalence of squatter settlements. The environment was fraught with security issues and lacked order, posing challenges for its residents. In response to th
ese challenges, the leaders of the area, recognizing the need for organized governance and security, took decisive action. On November 25, 1987, the Sangguniang Panlungsod enacted Ordinance 77, which formally carved out Camino Nuevo from Barangay Canelar. This legislative move marked the beginning of a new chapter for the community, empowering it with its own set of barangay leaders and governance structure. The creation of Camino Nuevo into a barangay was further solidified by the signing of City Ordinance No. 77 on December 5, 1987, by OIC Mayor Rustico Varela. With newfound leadership and a sense of purpose, the community embarked on a journey of development and progress. Over time, Camino Nuevo earned its place as a respected and integral part of Zamboanga City, contributing to its cultural, social, and economic landscape. Today, Dia de Camino Nuevo, celebrated annually on November 25, commemorates this historic milestone, honoring the resilience and determination of its founders and residents. It serves as a reminder of how community action and leadership can shape a brighter future for all.
