₱4.1M cigarette haul stopped at Zamboanga del Norte checkpoint

More than ₱4.1 million worth of undocumented ci******es were intercepted at a police checkpoint in Salug, leading to the arrest of a 47-year-old driver.

Police Regional Office 9 said personnel of the Salug Municipal Police Station flagged down a Nissan Livina around 9:30 p.m. September 1 at Purok Kalauman, Barangay Canawan, during a random checkpoint.

Inside the vehicle, police said they found 525 reams of Berlin ci******es and 524 reams of Champion ci******es.

The shipment had an estimated value of ₱4,133,060, based on the Bureau of Customs standard price, according to PRO9.

The driver, a resident of Zamboanga City, was arrested for alleged violation of Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law.

The ci******es and vehicle were placed under the custody of Salug police pending further legal proceedings and coordination with other government agencies.

PRO9 Regional Director PBGen Elmer E. Ragay said checkpoint operations would continue as police work with partner agencies against the transport of undocumented and illegal goods.

“Our police personnel will remain vigilant and steadfast in enforcing the law. Through strengthened checkpoint operations and close coordination with partner agencies, PRO 9 will continue to prevent the transport and distribution of undocumented and illegal goods in the region,” Ragay said.

The arrest does not establish guilt, and the driver remains presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court.

PRO 9 ARRESTS INDIVIDUAL, SEIZES OVER ₱4.1 MILLION WORTH OF UNDOCUMENTED CI******ES IN ZAMBOANGA DEL NORTE

Police Regional Office (PRO) 9 arrested a man and seized more than ₱4.1 million worth of undocumented ci******es during a checkpoint operation in Barangay Canawan, Salug, Zamboanga del Norte, on September 1, 2026.

At around 9:30 PM, personnel of the Salug Municipal Police Station (MPS), who were conducting a random checkpoint operation at Purok Kalauman, Barangay Canawan, flagged down a Nissan Livina for routine verification and inspection.

During the inspection, the operating personnel discovered a total of 525 reams of Berlin ci******es and 524 reams of Champion ci******es inside the vehicle.

The confiscated ci******es have an estimated value of ₱4,133,060.00, based on the Bureau of Customs Standard Price Price.

The driver, a 47-year-old male resident of Zamboanga City, was arrested for alleged violation of Republic Act No. 10643, or the Graphic Health Warnings Law.

The undocumented ci******es and the vehicle are currently under the custody of the Salug MPS pending proper disposition and further legal proceedings in coordination with concerned government agencies.

Police Brigadier General Elmer E Ragay, Regional Director, PRO 9, commended the operating personnel for their vigilance and underscored the importance of sustained police operations.

Mangyaring ipabatid sa lahat na ang National Police Clearance System (NPCS) ay pansamantalang hindi pa rin magagamit hanggang sa ngayon dahil sa kasalukuyang problema sa internet connectivity na nakaaapekto sa system.

Batay sa pinakahuling impormasyon mula sa internet service provider, nakaranas ng fiber cut sa isa sa mga network line kung saan nakakonekta ang NPCS server.

Dahil dito, naapektuhan ang connectivity ng NPCS server na nagresulta sa pansamantalang unavailability ng system at kawalan ng access sa pagproseso ng mga transaksyon ng NPCS.

Kasalukuyang nakikipag-ugnayan at nagsasagawa ng kinakailangang technical intervention ang internet service provider upang matugunan ang problema sa fiber cut. Ginagawa nila ang kanilang makakaya upang mapabilis ang pagkukumpuni, at pagpapanumbalik ng apektadong linya ng connection upang maibalik sa normal na operasyon ang NPCS sa lalong madaling panahon.

Magbibigay ng kaukulang update sa sandaling magkaroon ng karagdagang impormasyon o kapag muli nang magiging available ang system.

13 MOST WANTED PERSONS ARRESTED IN ONE-DAY NATIONWIDE OPERATIONS

The Philippine National Police (PNP) arrested 13 wanted persons, including several regional most wanted individuals and one national most wanted person, in separate operations conducted across the country on September 2, 2026.

Among the significant arrests was a national most wanted person with a ₱50,000 reward who was apprehended in Upi, Maguindanao del Norte in connection with a murder case. The operation involved police units from Isabela, South Cotabato, and Maguindanao del Norte, together with CIDG and intelligence personnel. The arrested individual was placed under the custody of the CIDG Isabela PFU.

In Iligan City, police arrested a No.1 Most Wanted Person in the region in connection with four counts of r**e. In another operation in Jimenez, Misamis Occidental, a No. 2 Most Wanted Person was apprehended over four counts of statutory r**e. Meanwhile, a No. 3 Most Wanted Person was arrested in Asuncion, Davao del Norte for cases involving statutory r**e, r**e by sexual assault, and acts of lasciviousness.

In other operations, police arrested two No. 10 Most Wanted Persons in Malapatan, Sarangani Province, both in connection with murder cases. Another wanted individual listed among the region's No. 9 was apprehended in Pigcawayan, Cotabato for r**e, while a No. 10 most wanted person was arrested in Senator Ninoy Aquino, Sultan Kudarat for violation of Republic Act No. 10883.

Other arrests were made in New Bataan, Davao de Oro, where a No.7 Most Wanted Person was apprehended for parricide; Pulilan, Bulacan, where a No.5 Most Wanted Person was arrested in connection with 30 counts of r**e by sexual assault in relation to Republic Act No. 7610; Esperanza, Agusan del Sur, where a No. 7 Most Wanted Person was arrested for statutory r**e; and Davao City, where a No. 3 Most Wanted Person was apprehended for syndicated estafa.

Another wanted person was arrested in Braulio E. Dujali, Davao del Norte, in connection with cases involving qualified statutory r**e, acts of lasciviousness, sexual assault, and qualified r**e through sexual assault. All 13 arrests were carried out by virtue of warrants of arrest, with the arrested individuals turned over to the appropriate police units or custodial facilities for proper disposition.

Chief PNP Police General Jose Melencio C. Nartatez Jr. said the latest arrests show the importance of sustained intelligence work and coordination in locating wanted persons.

“Kapag may warrant, hindi ito dapat natatabunan ng panahon. We have to keep looking, keep coordinating, and make sure that every arrest is done properly and within the law. That is the kind of police work we want—focused, disciplined, and accountable,” PGen Nartatez said.

The operations are part of the PNP’s Focused Agenda, particularly under Enhanced Managing Police Operations, which supports coordinated and intelligence-led police action while ensuring that the rights of all persons are respected and legal procedures are observed.

The PNP will continue working with police units and partner agencies nationwide to locate wanted persons and support the judicial process, consistent with President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr.’s emphasis on public safety and the rule of law.

These continuing efforts form part of the PNP’s commitment to the “Bagong PNP para sa Bagong Pilipinas: Serbisyong Mabilis, Tapat at Nararamdaman,” delivering responsive and lawful police service to communities across the country.
