Focus Group Discussion (FGD) on Seaweed Farming Technologies and Practices

The Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-IX) in coordination with the Officr of the City Agriculturist, Agricultural Field Office VI conducted a focus group discussion on Seaweed Farming Technologies and Practices together with the SEAFDEC Seaweed consultants from Thailand and Indonesia to identify and assess the technologies and methods currently used in seaweed farming in Talaga, Licomo, Zamboanga City.

Training on Marine Fish Cage Operation and Management for Milkfish Grow-Out Culture

Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (BFAR-9) in coordination with the Office of the City Agriculturist, Agricultural Field Office VI conducted a two-day training on Marine Fish Cage Operation and Management for Milkfish Grow-Out Culture last August 25-26, 2026 together with Talaga Fisherfolk Association and Sama Bangingi Fisherfolk Association.

The activity aimed to enhance the fisherfolk’s knowledge and skills in properly operating and managing milkfish production from stocking up to harvest.

Topics covered included stocking, feeding management, sampling, monitoring, and proper harvesting techniques.

A total of 20 participants took part — 10 members from each of the two fisherfolk associations. This initiative supports fisherfolk livelihoods, helps reduce poverty, and promotes food security and sustainability in the district.

The Vitali Agricultural Field Office VI, led by Dr. Laurence G. Natividad, together with HVCDP Coordinators Junico Buslon and Ruffa Murillo, Corn Coordinator Graciella Marie San Juan, and Fisheries Coordinator Omar Sumaidi Abdurasid, conducted a Regular Meeting with the Limon Farmers and Fisherfolk Association on August 25, 2026, at Limon, Limaong, Zamboanga City.

The meeting served as a venue to strengthen coordination and ensure that farmers and fisherfolk are fully informed and connected to available government programs and services. Discussions focused on masterlist updating and RSBSA registration, government assistance and services, distribution of farm inputs, crop insurance, program and activity updates, as well as the concerns and needs of the association and its members.

The Vitali Agricultural Field Office VI assisted personnel from the Department of Agriculture (DA), Commission on Audit (COA), and Civil Society Organization (CSO) during the inspection and monitoring of the four-wheel-drive tractor awarded to the Tumitus-Limaong Cassava Farmers Association.

The activity was conducted on August 24, 2026, in Luuk, Limaong, Zamboanga City. During the inspection, CSO personnel interviewed association officers and members regarding the utilization and management of the machinery. Meanwhile, DA personnel reviewed and verified all relevant documents pertaining to the tractor to ensure proper documentation and full compliance with applicable requirements.

This inspection and monitoring activity aimed to assess the physical condition, utilization, and proper management of the farm machinery turned over to the association.

The Vitali Agricultural Field Office VI conducted a Hands-on Demonstration on Organic Concoction with the Tigbalabag Rural Improvement Club (RIC) on August 20, 2026, at Tigbalabag, Zamboanga City.

The Tigbalabag RIC represents the Vitali District in the Vegetable Garden Contest, wherein Organic Farming is one of the criteria for evaluation. In support of the club’s preparation for the competition, Ms. Ruffa Mae Murillo-Gambi, organic coordinator discussed an overview of the different types of organic concoctions, including their uses and benefits in vegetable production.
Following the discussion, the participants actively engaged in a hands-on activity on the preparation of organic concoctions, particularly those used as foliar fertilizers.

The Vitali Agricultural Field Office VI conducted a Regular Meeting with rice farmers and the Centro Limaong Farmers Association and Limaong Farmers Association.

The meeting was led by Rice Coordinator Ms. Nur-aina A. Muallam, under the supervision of Agricultural Field Officer Dr. Laurence G. Natividad.

With the presence and support of Barangay Chairman Hon. Romeo Lacastesantos, discussions focused on updating the associations’ masterlists, RSBSA registration, and PCIC crop insurance, as well as addressing the concerns and needs of rice farmers. An orientation on the proper and responsible use of fertilizers was also conducted, providing farmers with practical information on correct application methods, proper dosage, and appropriate timing to improve rice production and reduce unnecessary expenses.

The activity strengthened coordination between the farmers and the Office of the City Agriculturist, advancing the welfare and productivity of local rice farmers.

A total of 31 beneficiaries received 5,000 pieces of milkfish fry each during the distribution of Bangus Fry amounting to 155,000 pieces allocated for the fishpond operators of Vitali District last August 19, 2026 at Taloptap, Vitali, Zamboanga City.

This livelihood intervention project is funded by the Local Government Unit of Zamboanga City, under the leadership of Mayor Khymer T. Olaso. It supports fisherfolk livelihoods and aims to ensure food security and sustainability across the city and the region.

The Vitali Agricultural Field Office VI through HVCDP Coordinators Junico Buslon and Ruffa Murillo, under the supervision of Agricultural Field Officer Dr. Laurence G. Natividad, conducted Regular Meetings and Field Monitoring with the Inner Mangusu Farmers and Fisherfolk Association in Inner Mangusu on August 19, 2026, and the DAII Palm Growers Association in Purok 7, Barangay Licomo on August 20, 2026.

These activities provided an avenue to strengthen coordination with farmers and discuss key updates on masterlists, plans and programs, government agricultural services, RSBSA registration, crop insurance orientation, and farm input distribution.

Farmers were also given the opportunity to raise issues and concerns, while the team assessed the current status of each association and conducted field monitoring of their farms and crops.
