π Seconds Count: A Life Saved by Immediate Action
Early this morning, our team responded to a medical emergency involving a near-drowning incident in the Sta. Maria area.
While these calls are always heavy, this story has a powerful silver lining. Before our wheels even hit the pavement, a significant other on the scene recognized the emergency and immediately began CPR.
The Difference Quality CPR Makes
By the time we arrived, the patient was conscious, breathing, and responsive. This outcome wasn't just luckβit was the direct result of high-quality, immediate CPR.
In a drowning or cardiac event, the brain begins to suffer within minutes. When a bystander starts chest compressions right away, they act as a manual pump, keeping oxygenated blood flowing to the brain until professional help arrives.
π Scene Summary
β’ Initial Status: Patient was unconscious following submersion.
β’ Intervention: Oxygen therapy administered via nasal cannula.
β’ Outcome: Patient stabilized on-site.
β’ Vital Note: While the patient ultimately declined transport to the hospital, we strongly advise that near-drowning victims always seek a medical evaluation, as "secondary drowning" or delayed lung complications can occur hours later.
β€οΈ Are you prepared?
You don't need a medical degree to be a hero; you just need the training. We encourage everyone to take a basic CPR/First Aid course. You never know when those skills will be the bridge between a tragedy and a recovery.
Stay safe, look out for one another, and always keep an eye on the water.
