AVISO PUBLICO| Classes at all levels, both public and private schools in the city, REMAIN SUSPENDED on Thursday, August 20, 2026, to give way for the conduct of campus-wide anti-dengue measures amid the dengue epidemic declaration in the city.

The suspension is also due to the high heat index which hits extreme caution level per latest PAGASA bulletin.

Nonetheless, government services and business operations continue as usual.

School authorities are advised to use other learning modalities to ensure continuous education despite class interruptions.

The public is continuously advised to practice safety measures amid the dangerously high heat index.

Muling inaprubahan ng Senado sa third at final reading ang Senate Bill No. 1905 o ang Magna Carta for Barangay Health Workers (BHWs)โ€” panukalang batas na isinulong ni Senate Senior Deputy Majority Leader JV Ejercito bilang principal author at sponsor.

Matatandaang naipasa na rin ng Senado ang kaparehong panukalang batas noong 19th Congress at in-adopt na rin ng Kamara ang bersyon ng Senado. Gayunman, nabitin ito matapos bawiin ng House of Representatives ang panukala sa huling linggo ng nakaraang Kongreso.

Ayon kay Ejercito, hindi siya titigil hangga't hindi nagiging batas ang panukalang matagal nang hinihintay ng libo-libong Barangay Health Workers sa buong bansa.

"Hindi po tayo magsasawang ipaglaban ang panukalang batas na ito. Patuloy natin itong isusulong hanggang matupad natin ang ating pangako sa ating mga Barangay Health Workersโ€”na kilalanin ang kanilang sakripisyo at tiyaking matatanggap nila ang nararapat na benepisyo at proteksyon," aniya.

OLASO WARNS COMMUTERS VS 'LAWAY-LAWAY' GANG| Mayor Khymer Olaso urged commuters to remain vigilant after local police arrested two members of the laway-laway gang who were caught victimizing jeepney passengers, along Tomas Claudio Street near Yang's Hotel in Zone 3.

The two suspects were apprehended by police operatives during the operation and were later presented to Mayor Olaso at the City Hall conference room Friday afternoon, July 24.

During the presentation, the suspects admitted that they are members of the laway-laway gang and are not bona fide residents of Zamboanga City. They identified themselves as residents of Bacolod City and Surigao City, respectively.

Based on the suspects' own account, the laway-laway modus โ€“ derive from the Filipino word "laway", meaning saliva, works by having one member spit on an unsuspecting passenger to divert the victim's attention. While the victim wipes off the saliva, another member takes the victim's belongings before fleeing the scene.

Mayor Olaso reminded commuters to remain alert and safeguard their belongings particularly while waiting for or boarding public utility vehicles and in other crowded areas, saying: "Mag-ingat kayo [...] Naghihingi ako sa inyo ng presence of mind."

Meanwhile, police said the suspects may face theft charges in connection with the incident, pending the filing of additional complaints from victims to further strengthen the case against them.

The mayor likewise urged the public to immediately report suspicious individuals or criminal activities to the authorities. He also warned those engaged in the laway-laway scheme to stop victimizing people, reiterating that the local government and the Zamboanga City Police Office will continue intensifying efforts to keep Zamboanga City safe and secure.
