𝐐𝐔𝐈𝐑𝐈𝐍𝐎 𝐂𝐎𝐅𝐅𝐄𝐄 𝐒𝐓𝐀𝐊𝐄𝐇𝐎𝐋𝐃𝐄𝐑𝐒 𝐄𝐗𝐏𝐋𝐎𝐑𝐄 𝐅𝐀𝐑𝐌-𝐓𝐎-𝐂𝐔𝐏 𝐁𝐄𝐒𝐓 𝐏𝐑𝐀𝐂𝐓𝐈𝐂𝐄𝐒
The Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) R2 Quirino in collaboration with the Barista and Coffee Academy of Asia (BCAA), recently conducted a three-part session Coffee Study Tour on June 18, 2024, held at San Pablo City, Laguna, and Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila respectively.
Ms. Angela Raymond Ferreria-Tan, Managing Partner of BCAA, alongside other experts from the BCAA, served as the resource person during the activity.
The first stop was at the Cruz Farm - Bukid ni Juan in San Pablo City, Laguna, facilitated by Mr. Chester Nimer, Instructor of BCAA. During the visit, the team witnessed the BCAA's technologies and methods in coffee farming which have undergone thorough research and development.
After that, the team proceeded to Curve Coffee Roastery in Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila, where they delved into the intricacies of coffee roasting techniques through the guidance of Mr. Angelo Tangle of BCAA.
The tour concluded at the BCAA Campus in Tunasan, Muntinlupa City, Metro Manila, under the guidance of Mr. Paul Vincent Asuncion of BCAA, where attendees immersed themselves into BCAA’s top-notch coffee cupping practices.
The activity was initiated by the Department of Trade and Industry R2 Quirino’s Provincial SSF Coordinator, Ms. Joyce Marie Reyno.
The activity was attended by representatives from the Industry Development Division of DTI R2, including Regional Coffee Industry Focal Rosemarie N. Batang; Provincial Government of Quirino (PGQ) Executive Assistant Elmor Villaruel and Mr. Jose S. Candelario (from Provincial Tourism Office); Executive Assistant Emogene Senense and Mr. Emmanuel Mostajo (from Q-Life Upland System); Community Affairs Officer Analyn K. Abluyan (from the Office of the Provincial Agriculturist); Assistant Professor Jonathan Tariga and TESDA Coordinator Bernard Milla (from Quirino State University); and Diffun Saranay and Development Cooperative’s (DISADECO) Coffee Department Head, Michael Tacadena.
The coffee study tour is undertaken to explore the innovative technologies and industry-leading practices employed by the BCAA. These are valuable inputs in the setting up and operationalization of the Coffee Cupping Laboratory and Coffee Shop Center in the province under Shared Serviced Facilities (SSF) Projects. It reinforced DTI’s steadfast commitment to advancing excellence and innovation in industry development.

The Cagayan Valley coffee beans were once again green graded as Fine Robusta and Specialty Arabica, the highest classification per category, in the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition (PCQC) 2024, which was facilitated by the Barista and Coffee Academy of Asia, Inc. from March to May 2024.
The PCQC is an annual competition designed to identify and promote the best quality coffees in the Philippines to domestic and international markets to benefit producers, market actors, and consumers.
Of the nine (9) coffee entries from the Cagayan Valley, four (4) received a green grade as Fine Robusta, and one (1) was classified as Specialty Arabica.

The DTI R2 (Department of Trade and Industry Region 2) extends its heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to our coffee farmers' efforts to improve the quality of their produce. According to the PCQC judges' recommendations, the DTI R2 and DA RFO2 will provide assistance and interventions to further improve and develop the region's coffee industry, as well as introduce specialty and single-origin Cagayan Valley coffee to the local and global markets. # # #

R2 COFFEE GREEN BEANS GRADE FINE ROBUSTA, SPECIALTY ARABICA IN PCQC 2023

Good News || Cagayan Valley coffees were green graded as Fine Robusta and Specialty Arabica, the highest classification per category, in the Philippine Coffee Quality Competition (PCQC) 2023 which was facilitated by the Barista and Coffee Academy of Asia, Inc. from March to May 2023.

The PCQC is an annual competition designed to identify and promote the best quality coffees in the Philippines to domestic and international markets to benefit producers, market actors, and consumers. Through the PCQC, coffee farmers and producers are encouraged to improve the quality of their coffee beans as well as their market access as these coffees are made known to specialty buyers through the competition results and subsequent auction which provides higher profit.

Out of the 13 coffee entries from Cagayan Valley, six (6) entries were graded as Fine Robusta and two (2) Specialty Arabica.

In addition to these remarkable achievements, the Angadanan Forest Region Agrarian Cooperative (AFRARCO) from Isabela received a citation during the PCQC 2023 Awarding during the Philippine Coffee Expo at the World Trade Center on June 4, 2023. Their entry was graded as Fine Excelsa, a non-competing category in the PCQC.
The DTI R2 extends its heartfelt congratulations and appreciation to the efforts of our coffee farmers in improving the quality of their produce.
The agency hopes to introduce Specialty Cagayan Valley Coffee to the local and global markets by continuously providing assistance and interventions for the development of R2’s Coffee Industry.

CAGAYAN VALLEY GRINDS TOWARD SPECIALTY, FINE COFFEE
The Cagayan Valley Coffee Industry Development Council (CVCIDC) through the DTI Region 2 and DA RFO2 conducted the CVCIDC 1st Sem Meeting at the Negosyo Center Bldg., DTI R2, Carig Sur, Tuguegarao City on 16 May 2023.
The convergence allowed the council members to thoroughly discuss the updates, commitments, issues, and concerns of the coffee farmers in the industry.
“We need to make sure that we are not just producing volumes of coffee, but we are also producing high-quality coffee, and that means putting the effort to make sure that our coffee is being processed well,” said DTI R2 ARD Winston Singun as he delivered the message of DTI R2 RD Leah Pulido Ocampo.
Moreover, ARD also mentioned the assistance of DTI R2 in support of the industry such as capacity building training, provision of planting materials, market matching, and promotional activities among others.
“The DA experiment stations are putting their efforts towards improving the existing coffee varieties in the region and continuously procuring additional varieties that are said to be of good production,” said DA RFO2 RTD for Operations and Extension Roberto Busania, presiding officer, as he highlighted that the coffee industry should be developed in order to create more opportunities for the region’s coffee farmers.
DA RFO2’s 1st quarter accomplishments and Coffee Program/Projects/Activities for 2023 and Updates on the Localized Coffee Roadmap, Council Members’ 1st Quarter Accomplishments and Proposed Programs, Projects, and Activities in Support to the Coffee Industry, Presentation of Statistical Data on the Coffee Industry, and matters such as the upcoming Philippine Coffee Expo, TWG for Philippine Coffee Quality Competition (PCQC) were discussed during the meeting.
In addition, it was seen that the coffee industry’s data play an important part in stirring the development of the industry, hence, the council invited the Philippine Statistics Authority Region 2 as a member of the council. This will ensure that the data of the industry will be updated and presented to the succeeding council meetings.
Furthermore, the CVCIDC is hopeful that the coffee entries for PCQC 2023 will result in a good outcome. During the council meeting, it was decided that the region will be participating in the Philippine Coffee Expo on June 2023 and the DA RFO2 and DTI R2 will be working hand-in-hand to assist the region’s exhibitors. The winners of the PCQC 2023 will be announced during the said coffee expo.
The meeting was also attended by Ms. Juliet Morales, co-chair (private), DENR, PCIC, DAR, TESDA, DOT, Provincial Coffee Councils, Isabela PLGU, and NVSU. #
