KALANGUYA NATIONAL HIGH SCHOOL HOLDS HEALTH AND SAFETY INFO DRIVE

WANGWANG, TINOC, IFUGAO — Kalanguya National High School successfully conducted the Quarterly Simultaneous National Earthquake Drill (SNED) followed by a Safety and Health Information Drive on November 4, 2025, to promote students’ awareness of fire prevention, earthquake preparedness, and dengue prevention.

The activity began with a fire safety information drive led by FO2 Alfredo G. Madinno, who discussed essential reminders on fire prevention and safety measures. He demonstrated the proper way to use a fire extinguisher, after which several students were given the opportunity to try it themselves. Mr. Roland Dulawan, the school’s DRRM coordinator, also participated in the demonstration to encourage student involvement and hands-on learning.

Following the fire safety session, Ms. Rebecca Dincog from the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) conducted an informative discussion on earthquake preparedness. She emphasized the importance of remaining calm, alert, and organized during emergencies and reminded students to always practice the “Duck, Cover, and Hold” technique during earthquake drills.

The program concluded with a Health Information Drive by Nurse Noveba Lumauig from the Wangwang Health Station, who shared practical tips on dengue prevention through the “4Ts”—Taob (cover water containers when not in use), Taktak (remove stagnant water), Tuyo (keep surroundings dry), and Takip (cover clean water containers). Nurse Lumauig highlighted that these simple yet consistent practices can greatly help prevent the spread of dengue in the community.

The team was accompanied by the school head, Mr. Jerico Bando, who expressed his gratitude to the guests for their dedication and service in promoting safety and wellness among learners.

Nutrition Takes the Spotlight at Kalanguya NHS Culminating Activity

Nutrition took center stage as Kalanguya National High School successfully held its Nutrition Month Culminating Activity on July 28, 2025, in celebration of the national theme: “Food at Nutrition Security Maging Priority: Sapat na Pagkain, Karapatan Natin.”

Blending fun, flavor, and facts, the event became a dynamic platform to promote healthy living and empower learners with both knowledge and practical skills supporting food security and wellness. True to its purpose, the celebration highlighted student competencies in MAPEH and TLE, proving that learning goes beyond books—it can be danced, drawn, cooked, and quizzed too!

The program began with an inspiring message from Sir Jerico Bando, School Head, who emphasized the importance of nutrition in students’ academic success and overall well-being. This was followed by a compelling keynote speech by Ms. Noveba Lumauig, Nurse II, who delivered practical and impactful insights on healthy eating.

“You are what you eat,” she reminded everyone, adding that “one egg in the morning can energize our body for the whole day.” She also encouraged the audience to fill half their plates with fruits and vegetables and shared tips on GAP—Good Agricultural Practices, highlighting the need to be mindful not just of what we eat, but how it's grown and sourced.

The celebration then came alive with vibrant student performances and contests:
🎶 Grade 7 students kicked things off with a lively Zumba dance, showcasing how movement contributes to a healthy lifestyle.
💃 Grade 8 followed with a dynamic hip-hop number, integrating physical fitness into their MAPEH learning.
🧠 The Nutrition Quiz Bee, featuring participants from Grades 7 to 12, tested and celebrated their growing knowledge of nutrition and food-related concepts.
🎨 In the Poster Making Contest, young artists visually expressed the importance of good nutrition.
👩‍🍳 Finally, the Cooking Contest highlighted the students' TLE skills, with chopsuey—a simple yet nutritious dish—taking the spotlight.

The program concluded with a meaningful communal lunch shared by students, teachers, and staff. The spread featured healthy, hearty meals including native chicken, chopsuey, gabi, and fresh fruits—bringing the "Go, Grow, and Glow" food groups to life on every plate.

More than just a culminating event, it was a celebration of rights, responsibility, and resourcefulness. It empowered learners to apply classroom lessons to real life—proving that nutrition education is most effective when it’s infused with creativity, collaboration, and of course, a well-balanced meal. 🥗💪🍎

La Trinidad, Benguet// The Department of Education in Cordillera Administrative Region (DepEd-CAR) is seeking volunteers for the annual "Brigada Eskwela" (School Brigade) on June 9 to 13.

Cooperation and generosity from different sectors will help prepare the schools for the opening of classes, eventually benefitting learners, according to DepEd-CAR Director Dr. Estela Cariño.

“We invite the public, our partners, please join us again for the Brigada Eskwela,” Cariño said in interview Friday.

“Nakakatulong din po ito sa status ng education natin kasi ang learners natin hindi kailangan problemahin ang pag-aayos ng classrooms, surroundings nila, paghahanap ng upuan dahil ginagawa na ang mga ito (this helps the status of education in our region because our learners do not need to spend their school time to fix their classroom, the surroundings and look for desks to use because these issues are already resolved) during the Brigada.”

She also asked the Philippine National Police, a consistent Brigada partner in the past, to still be part of the activity.

“Although we know that this was taken out as part of the activities of the police for them to focus on peace and order, we are still hopeful that they can be with us for the opening of classes through the Brigada,” she said.

During the Brigada Eskwela, volunteers from different sectors of the community do not just provide materials needed for the repair, basic rehabilitation and improvement of the schools and fixing of the desks, but also do the actual repair, cleaning and repainting.
