Susana Enjambre, recognized as the Mother of the Lechon Industry in Talisay, initiated the lechon business before the war since Talisay was one of the summer vacation destinations during the American period. She was born on January 2, 1886, and she was married to Dionesio Enjambre. According to newspaper articles from the Bag Ong Kusog, lechon business in Talisay started as early as the 1930s. She is regarded as the first mangasalay to enter the lechon industry prior to the war.

The 17th Sangguniang Panlalawigan of Cebu has encouraged Local Chief Executives (LCEs) to prioritize the regularization of tourism officers and their employees and to formally establish tourism offices.

Fifth District Board Member Andrei β€œRed” Duterte sponsored the resolution encouraging these tourism initiatives.

The Cebu Provincial Board recognizes that a significant number of tourism officers and staff remain in contractual, casual, or job order status despite the critical role they play.

This situation leaves tourism officers and staff without security of tenure, benefits, and the protections accorded to regular government employees.

β€œThe regularization of tourism officers and their employees is essential to ensuring continuity of service, institutional knowledge, and program implementation, as high personnel turnover due to job insecurity undermines the effectiveness of tourism initiatives,” the Resolution states.

Board Member Duterte also filed a resolution requesting the Cebu Provincial Government to provide an equitable subsidy to local government units (LGUs) to support them in creating their respective Tourism Master Plans.

The said Resolutions were co-authored by Seventh District Board Member Paz Rozgoni and approved by the sanggunian during its regular session last Monday, April 27, 2026.

Today, as we celebrate Labor Day, we recognize the invaluable contribution of every tourism worker who helps drive our local economies forward.

The Cebu Association of Local Tourism Officers stands in full support of the Sangguniang Panlalawigan’s initiative to regularize tourism personnel and strengthen local tourism officesβ€”an important step toward dignifying the work of those behind our thriving destinations.

Tourism is powered by people. By securing their welfare, we ensure stronger communities, sustainable development, and inclusive growth for every Local Government Unit.

πŸ“œ DID YOU KNOW?

Don Potenciano β€œMaestro Poten” Alino was the FIRST Visayan writer to translate JosΓ© Rizal’s Mi Último AdiΓ³s into the Cebuano language.

His version, β€œAng Katapusang Panamilit,” was published in 1902 in the local newspaper Pamantalaan nga Filipino, which he also edited.

πŸ‡΅πŸ‡ But his story doesn’t end there…

Maestro Poten was a leader of the 1898 Talisay Revolution, and once served as:
β€’ Escribiente in the court of Judge Segundo Singson
β€’ Directorcillo (Municipal Secretary) of Talisay in 1889 under Gobernadorcillo Hilario Bacus

From 1893 to 1896, he and Don Florencio Gonzales represented the inquilinos in Manilaβ€”where he may have been initiated into the Katipunan while staying in Tondo.

In 1901, he surrendered to American authorities. During the American period, he:
β€’ Established two Spanish grammar schools in San Nicholas and Cansojong, Talisay
β€’ Served as a translator of the New Testament into the vernacular

πŸ“– Remarkably, this translation is the ONLY surviving work of Maestro Poten after the warβ€”
and is considered the oldest known Cebuano translation of Mi Último Adiós.
