Philippine Statistics Authority – Provincial Statistical Office Davao del Norte commemorated the 86th Anniversary of Commonwealth Act No. 591, honoring the historical foundation of the country’s official statistical system and its continuing contribution to nation-building. The activity was held earlier at the PSA Conference Room, City of Tagum, Davao del Norte.

As part of the commemoration, retired PSA/NSO personnel were invited and recognized during the activity, highlighting their valuable years of service and contributions to the Philippine statistical system. Their presence added significance to the celebration, providing an opportunity for PSA personnel to pay tribute to those who helped build and strengthen the institution throughout the years.

The commemoration also highlighted the continuing institutional legacy of the Philippine statistical system, from the Bureau of the Census and Statistics (1940), to the National Census and Statistics Office (1974), the National Statistics Office (1987), and eventually the Philippine Statistics Authority (2013).

The activity featured Ms. Raven Dianne Aguan as the Resource Speaker, who shared valuable insights on Sexual Orientation, Gender Identity, and Gender Expression (SOGIE), providing participants with a deeper understanding of the importance of fostering a respectful, safe, and inclusive environment for everyone.

ON THIS DAY: 86 years ago, Commonwealth Act No. 591 was signed into law, paving the way for the establishment of the Bureau of the Census and Statistics (BCS). 📊🇵🇭

Enacted on 19 August 1940, the law marked an important milestone in the development of the Philippine statistical system by consolidating the government’s statistical activities, including the collection of population, social, and economic data through direct enumeration and sampling.
From then, the country’s statistical system has continued to evolve, with advances in technology, data production, and statistical coordination—all toward one goal: producing timely, relevant, and reliable official statistics that guide policymaking and shape national development.

As we commemorate this milestone, we recognize the generations of statisticians, census workers, researchers, and public servants whose contributions continue to strengthen the country’s statistical system. 🫡

LOOK | PSA holds CRVS Academy Batch 14 for Local Civil Registrars for capacity-building

The Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA) continues to strengthen the country’s Civil Registration and Vital Statistics (CRVS) system through CRVS Academy Batch 14, which brings together Local Civil Registrars (LCRs) and their staff for learning and capacity-building.

In his message, PSA Undersecretary Claire Dennis S. Mapa, PhD, National Statistician and Civil Registrar General, highlighted the PSA’s various initiatives on CRVS and the critical role of local civil registry offices in improving the quality, efficiency, and accessibility of civil registration services for Filipinos and the public.

The Academy featured various modules on civil registration and vital statistics to equip LCRs with practical knowledge, skills, and opportunities for collaboration.
