On 20 August 2026, Ambassador Johann Brieger and Madame Roswitha Brieger hosted “An Afternoon of Music and Viennese Sweets” at the Austrian Residence in celebration of 80 years of Austrian–Philippine Diplomatic Relations through music, culture. 🇦🇹🤝🇵🇭

In partnership with the Manila Symphony Orchestra, the programme featured Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s beloved Eine Kleine Nachtmusik, alongside cherished Filipino compositions played by four exceptionally talented musicians: Jeanne Marquez (violin), Cedric Regalario (violin), Sara Maria Gonzales (viola), and Damodar das Castillo (cello).

The event highlighted the Austrian roots of the Manila Symphony Orchestra. Founded in 1926 by Austrian Maestro Alexander Lippay, the MSO is celebrating its 100th anniversary this year, bringing together two remarkable milestones in our shared cultural history!

The event was also Inspired by the tradition of chamber music evenings in the salons of 19th-century Vienna where guests were treated to an array of traditional Viennese sweets and desserts. 🍰🇦🇹

The afternoon concluded with a special sweet surprise: a beautiful anniversary cake featuring the 80th anniversary logo of Austria–Philippines diplomatic relations alongside the Manila Symphony Orchestra’s 100th anniversary, a fitting symbol of the enduring friendship between Austria and the Philippines, celebrated through a shared love of music and culture.

This Tuesday let's learn how to say goodbye like a proper Austrian:
"𝘽𝙪𝙨𝙨𝙞, 𝘽𝙖𝙗𝙖!”

Commonly heard in Vienna, ''Bussi, Baba'' literally translates to “Kiss, bye-bye!” It’s especially common as the final farewell on the phone, but you’ll also hear it (though less frequently) when saying goodbye to friends and family in person. 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦

The phrase carries a sense of warmth and closeness. ''Bussi'' refers to the little kiss Austrians might give when saying goodbye, while ''Baba'' is a familiar way of saying “bye.”

Of course, you can’t exactly give someone a ''Bussi'' over the phone, so Austrians simply say it out loud instead! 😄

And often, ''Bussi, Baba'' isn’t even the first goodbye—it comes after a whole cascade of “Tschüss!”, “Ciao!”, “Bis bald!” and “Servus!” before the call finally, finally ends. 👋

So next time you’re saying goodbye in Vienna, remember:

Today is the start of the Burning Lederhos'n Festival🔥 in Silvretta Montafon, one of the ten largest skiing resorts in Austria.

Austria is full of hidden gems.💎🌟

Today we turn the spotlight on to illuminate one of them: Hainburg an der Donau.

The idyllic small town located in the state of Lower Austria sparkles bright alongside the Danube river.🏘️

With a population count of just about 7.000 people this unassuming city impresses with its rich history and cultur.

Among the sites to see is the biggest medival city gate in all of Europe, the Martin Luther Church, the ruins of the old Hainburg castle, and the Braunsberg; an ideal hiking location with clear views of Hainburg and the danube.🌄🇦🇹

Where we introduce a typical Austrian idiom, phrase, or word every week, along with a short explanation of what it means and how it’s used .

This Tuesday we are talking nonsense:
"der Schmarr'n”

This word literally means "nonsense" and you might have heard it in the word "Kaiserschmarr'n" (meaning Emporer's nonsense), a dessert so famous in Austria, that when you just look up "austrian dessert recipes" it is bound to show up.

This word is mostly used to tell someone that what they are saying does not make sense. "Wos red's denn du für an Schmarr'n" means "What kind of nonsense are you spewing". You will also hear it used to describe things that don't work as they should. A newly bought radio that doesn't turn on is definitely a Schmarr'n. ✨🇦🇹

Austria is world-famous for the Sound of Music, Mozart and the Vienna Philharmonics but there is so much more musical talent to explore!🎼

Today we present: "No other you" by the Austiran-Filipino singer-songwriter Vincent Bueno. 🇦🇹🎶🇵🇭

Vincent Bueno entered the spot light when he won the Austrian singing competition "Musical! Die Show" in 2008 and later represented Austria at the Eurovision Song Contest in 2020/21.

Released on 8th of May this year, the song is a tribute to his father, who has recently passed away. The song mesmerizes with soothing vocals and somber piano accompaniment.🌙

A great day trip just an hour car-ride away from Innsbruck at the beautiful Achensee. An easy trail for the whole family. See if you can find the figures placed alongside the trail and take a picture with them.

𝟮. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝘀𝗽𝗶𝗿𝗶𝘁𝘂𝗮𝗹 𝘁𝗿𝗮𝗶𝗹: the Jakobsweg ⛪
Pilgrim along the world famous Camino de Santiago or as we say "Jakobsweg" and marvel at the historical and spiritually-rich landscapes of the Camino in Austria.

𝟯. 𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗹𝗼𝗻𝗴 𝗵𝗶𝗸𝗲: Stubaier Höhenweg 🥾
This hike is made for the adventurous. 8 days, 100km and 8.000 metres of elevation gain. Truly this is anything but easy, but the views are unmatched and on top the food served at the mountain lodges is Austrian through and through.
