Literacy is a fundamental human right for everyone as it opens the door for people to acquire the knowledge and skills that will help them reach their full potential.

Today, 8th September 2026, marks the 60th anniversary of International Literacy Day (ILD). To celebrate this milestone, the Embassy of Finland in Manila donated a total of 260 copies of the book entitled “100 Panlipunang Inobasyon Mula sa Finland” to various public libraries all over the Philippines. Some copies of the books were also sent to our Cebu Honorary Consul Franco Soberano’s foundation, CLI Foundation, and to the Quezon City government, through Mayor Joy Belmonte, for distribution to public libraries in their respective areas. 📘

As Ambassador Saija Nurminen wrote in the letter addressed to the public libraries, “Finland is recognized for its strong commitment to education, reading, and lifelong learning. In the spirit of this tradition, we are pleased to share these books with your public library, where they may inspire readers, support learning, and be enjoyed by people of all ages.” 🇫🇮🤝🇵🇭

For the past 3 years, Veera Kaarela has led many of the sendoff gatherings for colleagues leaving the Embassy of Finland in Manila. However, the tables are turned today as it is the Embassy staff members who bid farewell to our very own Deputy Head of Mission. ✈️

In her role as DHOM, Veera's calendar is packed with meetings and events. Nevertheless, she always finds the time to answer what could be the silliest questions or assist with seemingly overwhelming tasks, all while maintaining her trademark "no worries" demeanor. A founding member of the Embassy’s Committee of Fun, she made sure that everyone participated in the government issued mandatory day of fun. It is no wonder she is sometimes called "Pres" by the local staff 😉

So what is next for Veera? Will she continue to surprise people with her 🎤 ability? Will she return to her Tampere ⚽ roots as a goalie? Will she pursue 🏄‍♀️ - something she picked up in La Union and Siargao - all while saving 🐢 on the side? Well, only time will tell as she is off to the European Diplomatic Academy in Belgium 🇧🇪.

Today marks the World Humanitarian Day 🌍🤝📦

Humanitarian needs are rising, while delivering aid is becoming more dangerous. Humanitarian workers provide life-saving assistance to people affected by conflicts, disasters and other crises around the world.

On this day, we recognize their work, stand in solidarity with people affected by crises, and reaffirm the importance of protecting civilians and humanitarian workers everywhere.
