Turning waste into opportunity! 🍌🍃

DOST-ITDI's MMIC recently showcased its banana peel powder technology to Manila Catering Corporation led by Mr. Danilo V. Barcelon, demonstrating how banana peel waste can be transformed into a valuable alternative flour and dietary fiber ingredient. This collaboration highlights the power of science and innovation in promoting sustainable manufacturing, reducing processing waste, and supporting food security and environmental sustainability.

DOST-ITDI’s MMIC Demonstrates Banana Peel Powder Innovations for Manila Catering Corporation

The technology demonstration showcased the outputs of the DOST-GIA project, "Utilization of Banana Peel Wastes from Agro-Industrial Processing as Alternative Flour and Dietary Fiber Source and Its Applications." The activity was led by the DOST-ITDI project team led by Mr. Danilo V. Barcelon, Jr., DOST S&T Fellow I together with Chemicals and Energy Division OIC Engr. Apollo C. Bawagan, Technological Services Division BDS Head Dr. Lorelle P. Baracol, representatives from DOST-PCIEERD Food Sector, Ms. Fatima Jhoan Ibaretta and Mr. JC Medel Victorio, and officials of Manila Catering Corporation headed by its President and CEO, Mrs. Miguelita Baron. The activity was held at the MMIC Building, DOST Compound, Bicutan, Taguig City on July 14, 2026.

MCC, a duly registered food manufacturer established in 1988, is one of the country's leading producers of banana-based food products. Its increasing production capacity has caused MCC substantial quantities of banana peels to remain underutilized, resulting in additional waste management and disposal costs.

This partnership aims to convert banana peel waste into valuable products, promote sustainable practices, and create new business opportunities while supporting food security and environmental goals. Beyond addressing food processing waste, the initiative demonstrates how science, technology, and innovation can help industries adopt sustainable manufacturing practices while contributing to food security, environmental protection, and the achievement of the Department's priority programs and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

SANA OIL: DOST-ITDI Training on Essential Oil Extraction ✨🌿

Congratulations to the 14 participants from academia, research institutions, and industry who successfully completed the Training on Essential Oil Extraction conducted by the Chemicals and Energy Division (CED), DOST-ITDI on 18 June 2026 at the DOST-ITDI Innovation Hub and CED Building.

The training brought together educators, researchers, entrepreneurs, and product developers for a day of learning, knowledge-sharing, and hands-on experience in essential oil extraction. Participants gained valuable insights into essential oils, extraction technologies, by-products, and their applications in research, product innovation, and enterprise development.

The lecture sessions were facilitated by Ms. Rikkamae Zinca Marie L. Walde and Mr. Jan Rotsen Kyle A. Delos Santos, while the hands-on demonstration was expertly conducted by Mr. Romulo R. Estrella, Mr. Patrick B. Marasigan, and Mr. Rudy Leo L. Quiniquito, allowing participants to experience the extraction process from concept to practice.

To further enrich the learning experience, Mr. Danilo V. Barcelon, Jr. guided the participants through the Modular Multi-Industry Innovation Center (MMIC), where they explored upscaled processing equipment and technologies for converting agricultural wastes into high-value products—demonstrating how innovation can create sustainable opportunities from local resources.

We also extend our sincere appreciation to the Technical Services Division (TSD) for their invaluable support in coordinating and facilitating this training, helping make the event a meaningful and successful learning experience for all.

𝗟𝗢𝗢𝗞: In the latest Publicus Asia survey for the first quarter of 2026, the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) has maintained its high approval rating, ranking second among national government agencies—just behind the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA).

DOST also secured the 2nd spot in terms of trust rating this quarter, once again following TESDA.

Notably, the agency’s approval and trust ratings reflect the public’s confidence in its programs and initiatives.

This recognition underscores DOST’s unwavering commitment to delivering inclusive, science-driven solutions and expanding opportunities that uplift the lives of every Filipino.
