Under the global framework of the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), SDG 14 calls for urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts. It emphasizes strengthening resilience, integrating climate measures into national policies, improving education and awareness, and mobilizing climate finance to support vulnerable countries.
Climate change is no longer a distant threat โ it is a present reality. Rising temperatures, prolonged droughts, floods, wildfires, and extreme weather events are affecting livelihoods, food systems, water resources, and economic stability worldwide.
In regions like the Horn of Africa โ including Ethiopia โ recurrent droughts and erratic rainfall continue to impact pastoralist and agro-pastoralist communities, increasing food insecurity and displacement.

Developing countries โ particularly in sub-Saharan Africa โ contribute the least to global greenhouse gas emissions but suffer disproportionately from climate impacts. Limited adaptive capacity, infrastructure gaps, and constrained financing slow resilience-building efforts at local levels.
Without accelerated mitigation and adaptation efforts, climate change will undermine progress across all other SDGs โ from food security and water access to health, education, and poverty reduction.
