In a powerful demonstration of global solidarity, the Department of Health (DOH), under the leadership of Secretary Dr. Teodoro “Ted” Herbosa, has mobilized a 32-member Philippine Emergency Medical Assistance Team (PEMAT) to respond to Myanmar’s devastating 7.7 magnitude earthquake. Of these, 18 are from the PEMAT of Eastern Visayas Medical Center.
Deployed earlier today, April 1, 2025, as part of a 90-member Philippine Inter-Agency Humanitarian Contingent, this marks PEMAT-EVMC’s first international mission since achieving World Health Organization verification last September—a testament to the Philippines’ growing emergency response capabilities.
Led by Dr. Ma. Ivy D. Lozada as Team Lead and Dr. Eric John D. Capito as Assistant Team Lead, the WHO-verified team comprises a skilled complement of physicians, nurses, allied health professionals, and technical staff to deliver comprehensive medical services. The team will provide daylight-hour outpatient care for both trauma and non-trauma cases, facilitate referrals, and 24/7 life-saving interventions for earthquake survivors.
Over the next two weeks, the PEMAT will operate under WHO’s emergency medical standards, ensuring quality care for earthquake survivors while strengthening the Philippines' role in global health security.
Their deployment represents a significant milestone not only in Eastern Visayas but in the country's journey from disaster-prone nation to capable international responder. Standing as a testament and achievement that reflects its dedication to saving lives, strengthening global healthcare efforts, and upholding the spirit of service beyond borders.
The contingent's rapid mobilization reflects the DOH's "Bawat Buhay Mahalaga" philosophy and the Bayanihan spirit of communal assistance, now extended across borders to support international disaster recovery efforts –embodying EVMC’s PEMAT Team and the DOH's steadfast commitment to saving lives, fostering resilience, and extending a helping hand wherever and whenever it is needed most.
