Death Anniversary
Most Rev. Sofronio G. Hacbang, D.D.
Second Bishop of Calbayog

Bishop Hacbang was born on 8 December 1887 in Calbiga, Samar. He was ordained priest of Calbayog in 1911 by Bishop Pablo Singzon, barely a year after Calbayog was made a diocese. He became the secretary to the Bishop. Barely 8 years in the priesthood, he was appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Calbayog and Titular Bishop of Anemutium; assisting Bishop Singzon, the first Bishop, in administering the spiritual needs of the diocese, at that time, comprising the whole islands of Samar and Leyte. He succeeded as Bishop of Calbayog after the death of Bishop Singzon, becoming its Second Bishop. He served the diocese with love and dedication. But due to his poor health and the vast coverage of his ministry, Bishop Hacbang died on 3 April 1937 at the age of 49.

Writer Chris Schweizer checked out a title that hadn’t circulated in nearly 30 years, and expressed his gratitude that it was still available to him. “Finding the balance between serving the most number of patrons, and the patrons in most need, with serving as an archive for books that won’t be widely or readily available a generation or two down the line, that’s a heck of a balance,” he added in continued praise of the essential institutions. ⁠
