Sibonga - Cebu South

Sibonga - Cebu South A town located south in the Island of Cebu "BONGA" is a native name for betel nut tree. The nuts aroused the curiosity of the Spaniards who came here.

One of them inquired "Que esto?" ( What is that? ). After repeating several times, accompanied by gestures, he was able to get the answers, "Bonga". "Que es bonga?", he asked again. The natives pointed to the arica palms. The chronicler of the Spanish exploring group recorded the word
"bonga" as the appropriate name of the place. This was later changed to Sibonga.
