Sikad Kabataan: Earth Warden Service Cooperative is a non-profit organization established in 2022 in Santa Fe, Cebu. The cooperative aims to provide a platform for young people to actively participate in protecting, conserving, and restoring the environment, as well as promoting economic empowerment, active citizenship, disaster risk reduction and management, and culture and heritage preservation.
The cooperative's scope is Cebu Province, with a focus on Santa Fe, a coastal town in Bantayan Island. Santa Fe is known for its white sandy beaches, crystal-clear waters, and abundant marine life, making it an ideal location for promoting sustainable tourism. Sikad Kabataan: Earth Warden Service Cooperative has five project components that reflect its mission to empower young people to take an active role in protecting the environment, promoting economic development, preserving culture and heritage, and building resilience against disasters. Firstly, the cooperative prioritizes environmental protection by creating an avenue for young people to collectively implement practical and sustainable initiatives, such as establishing coastal greenbelts, campaigning against single-use plastic, managing solid waste, protecting the island's water lens, and reforestation. Secondly, the cooperative promotes economic empowerment by training young people as tour guides during community-based bike tours, providing livelihood opportunities to children of fisherfolks, members of the LGBT, students, and solo-parents, and encouraging cooperativism among the youth for passive income. Thirdly, the cooperative emphasizes active citizenship by training young people to take part in community development as active partners of the government. By doing so, the cooperative aims to empower the youth to participate in decision-making processes and promote youth engagement in local governance. Fourthly, the cooperative recognizes the importance of disaster risk reduction and management. In times of disasters, the youth will volunteer using their bikes for rapid assessment of disaster damage in communities. They will also work on psychosocial response to target traumas of children and co-youth after disasters. Lastly, the cooperative promotes culture and heritage preservation by working on the establishment of Santa Fe Museum and Cultural Mapping. Through community-based bike tours, the youth will also promote Bantayan Island and Santafehanon culture and heritage to tourists. Overall, Sikad Kabataan: Earth Warden Service Cooperative is an organization that seeks to empower young people to make a positive impact on their communities and the environment. Through its various initiatives, the cooperative aims to build a sustainable and resilient future for the youth and the province of Cebu.
