JBC INVITES FIVE SUPREME COURT JUSTICES TO APPLY FOR CHIEF JUSTICE POST

The Judicial and Bar Council (JBC) has identified five Supreme Court associate justices as “preferred candidates” and invited them to apply for the soon-to-be-vacant Chief Justice post.

The five justices are Marvic Leonen, Benjamin S. Caguioa, Ramon Paul L. Hernando, Henri Jean Paul B. Inting, and Rodil V. Zalameda.

Supreme Court spokesperson Atty. Camille Sue Mae Ting clarified that being named a “preferred candidate” does not mean the justices have already been formally nominated for the position.

“To be accurate, the JBC referred to them as preferred candidates and invited them to apply,” Ting said.

The JBC, which is constitutionally mandated to screen applicants and nominees for vacancies in the judiciary, began accepting applications and nominations on August 29.

The vacancy will arise when Chief Justice Alexander G. Gesmundo reaches the mandatory retirement age of 70 on November 6, 2026.

Interested applicants and nominators have until 4:30 p.m. on October 13 to submit the required documents.

Gesmundo’s retirement will mark the first Chief Justice vacancy under the administration of President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. He was appointed to the Supreme Court by then-President Rodrigo Duterte in August 2017 and was elevated to Chief Justice in April 2021.
