TROPICAL STORM “AGATON” CONTINUES TO MOVE VERY SLOWLY AND IS NOW OVER SAN PABLO BAY

The center of Tropical Storm “AGATON” was estimated based on all available data including those from Guiuan Doppler Weather Radar over the coastal waters of Tanauan, Leyte (11.1°N, 125.1°E)

Maximum sustained winds of 65 km/h near the center, gustiness of up to 90 km/h, and central pressure of 998 hPa

The southern portion of Eastern Samar (Giporlos, Balangiga, Lawaan), the southern portion of Samar (Daram, Zumarraga, Villareal, Talalora, Santa Rita, Pinabacdao, Basey, Marabut), Biliran, and the northern portion of Leyte (Dulag, Julita, Dagami, Jaro, Tabontabon, Carigara, Capoocan, Barugo, Tunga, Alangalang, Pastrana, Tanauan, Palo, Tolosa, Santa Fe, Tacloban City, San Miguel, Babatngon, Leyte, Calubian)

The rest of Eastern Samar, the rest of Samar, Northern Samar, the rest of Leyte, Southern Leyte, the northeastern portion of Cebu (Daanbantayan, Medellin, City of Bogo, San Remigio, Tabogon, Borbon, Tabuelan, Sogod, Catmon, Carmen, Danao City, Compostela, Liloan, Tuburan, Asturias) including Bantayan and Camotes Island, and the eastern portion of Bohol (Candijay, Mabini, Alicia, Ubay, San Miguel, Pres. Carlos P. Garcia, Trinidad, Bien Unido, Talibon, Getafe)

HAZARDS AFFECTING LAND AREAS
Heavy Rainfall
• Today: Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Eastern Visayas, Masbate, Sorsogon, Catanduanes, and the northern and central portions of Cebu including Bantayan and Camotes Islands. Light to moderate with at times heavy rains over Dinagat Islands, Oriental Mindoro, Marinduque, Romblon, and the rest of Bicol Region and Visayas.
• Tomorrow: Moderate to heavy with at times intense rains over Sorsogon, Masbate, Eastern Visayas. Light to moderate with at times heavy rains Dinagat Islands, Romblon, and the rest of Visayas.
• Under these conditions and considering significant antecedent rainfall, scattered to widespread flooding (including flooding) and rain-induced landslides are expected especially in areas that are highly or very highly susceptible to these hazard as identified in hazard maps.
Severe Winds
• Winds may reach gale-force in strength in any of the areas where Wind Signal No. 2 is hoisted throughout the passage of Tropical Storm “AGATON”.
• Strong winds (strong breeze to near gale conditions) will be experienced within any of the areas where Wind Signal No. 1 is currently in effect.
HAZARDS AFFECTING COASTAL WATERS
• In the next 24 hours, rough to very rough seas (2.8 to 4.5 m) will prevail over the seaboards of areas where Wind Signals No. 2 and 1 are hoisted. These conditions may be risky for most seacrafts. Mariners of small seacrafts are advised to remain in port or take shelter, while those operating larger vessels are advised to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea and, if possible, avoid navigating in these conditions.
• In the next 24 hours, moderate to rough seas (1.2 to 3.4 m) will also prevail over the remaining seaboards of the country that are not under any wind signal or gale warning. These conditions may be risky for those using small seacrafts. Mariners are advised to take precautionary measures when venturing out to sea and, if possible, avoid navigating in these conditions.
TRACK AND INTENSITY OUTLOOK
• Today through tomorrow afternoon, “AGATON” is forecast to slowly loop in the vicinity of northeastern portion of Leyte and the southern portions of Samar and Eastern Samar before emerging over the Philippine Sea by tomorrow evening as another tropical cyclone with international name “MALAKAS” begins to interact with it.
• “AGATON” is forecast to weaken into a tropical depression due to the frictional effects of land on its circulation. Any significant intensification will likely be inhibited by the binary interaction of “AGATON” and “MALAKAS”. Further weakening into a remnant low is likely by Wednesday evening as “AGATON” becomes assimilated within the circulation of “MALAKAS”.
Considering these developments, the public and disaster risk reduction and management offices concerned are advised to take all necessary measures to protect life and property. Persons living in areas identified to be highly or very highly susceptible to these hazards are advised to follow evacuation and other instructions from local officials. For heavy rainfall warnings, thunderstorm/rainfall advisories, and other severe weather information specific to your area, please monitor products issued by your local PAGASA Regional Services Division.
