Post-op instructions specially after tooth extraction for bleeding;
Immediate Actions (first few hours):
Bite down on the gauze pad: This helps control bleeding and encourages the formation of a blood clot. Change the gauze pad when it becomes soaked with blood, usually every 30 minutes to an hour.
Rest: Limit physical activity and avoid strenuous exercise to minimize bleeding.
Ice packs: Apply ice packs to the cheek near the extraction site for 15-20 minutes at a time, with breaks, to reduce swelling.
Medications: Take prescribed pain relievers or antibiotics as directed by your dentist.
First Few Days:
Soft diet: Focus on soft foods like yogurt, applesauce, mashed potatoes, soup, and smoothies. Avoid chewing on the extraction site.
Gentle oral hygiene: Avoid brushing the extraction site for a few days, but gently brush and floss your other teeth.
Warm salt water rinses: After 24 hours, rinse gently with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in a glass of warm water) 3-4 times a day to keep the area clean. Avoid rinsing vigorously.
Avoid smoking, using straws, or rinsing vigorously, as these can dislodge the blood clot.
Elevate your head: When resting or sleeping, prop your head up with pillows to reduce swelling.
When to Contact Your Dentist:
If you experience excessive bleeding, severe pain, fever, or signs of infection (pus, foul odor).
If numbness persists for more than a few hours.
If you have any concerns about your healing process.
Blood clot formation is crucial: The blood clot protects the bone and helps with healing.
Follow your dentist's instructions: They may have specific recommendations based on your individual case.
Patience is key: Healing takes time, so be patient and gentle with yourself.
